Nismo LSD
Ive sen alot of the nismo lsd's for sale lately. Why? Are they not that good of an lsd? Ive been waiting for the quaife but id really not like to spend 1400 when i can spend 650 on something that might work just as good. So if anyone can let me know about their experiences, maintanance and noise production thatd be great. Also if it will work on an open diff or if i will need to buy vlsd stub axles.
It's a good LSD.. it's just slightly noiser than other units.. Not as bad as the Kaaz 2way.... imho its a really good deal for the USED priced... especially if u have a base Z since it comes with the stubs...
thats my q, HOW noisy is it? Am i going to sound broken when i make a normal turn? When will it be noisy etc? I know relatively nothing about lsd's and i live in austin so its not like i get to hear a bunch of modded cars. Or will it only be noisy when im pushing the limits? I already have a JWT flywheel nismo exhaust and popcharger so my car already makes alot of sound but if its annoying wll then i dont want that. It could be an expensive mistake....
I have a Nismo LSD and love it. It is a bit noticeable when turning and the engagement may be slightly a bit strong for some that want to drive a mercedes instead of a sports car. If you want smooth engagement with little noise, you can go for a CUSCO, but I went with NISMO since it was less expensive and met my needs perfectly. I love it!

I want a sports car its either the nismo lsd or get the quaife. The reason im considering the nismo is bc i can get it for ALOT cheaper. I want excellent off the line grip and better corner traction but without the squeeling. Can anyone hear it over a radio in their cabin? I guess thats the best indication of how loud it will be.
Kaaz is probably the most aggressive sounding LSD for the Z. I never heard a Quaife yet though. I love my NISMO

OK.. with my experience.. this is an example of what it would be like if u heard it.
KAAZ: sounds like a box of rocks. you can hear it inside the cabin.. but the car i was in had the interior stripped. aka. race car.
Nismo: slight grinding noises. doesnt sound too bad in the slow turns inside the cabin. outside u can hear it.
Cusco: you can hear a slight popping noise in low speed, but you hear the tire scrub more so than the LSD grinding.. its really quiet. not silent.
I'm assuming the ATS carbon LSD would be just as good if not better than the cusco one.. u should ask Sharif. i think he has it.

If money wasnt an issue then the ats dual carbon lsd is the one id be getting. The problem is on top of the 1400 price i need vlsd axle stubs 300 and of course install and bearings/races. Its prob cost me around 2200-2300 by the time i twas all said and done if not more. I can get a used nismo for around 650 that fits the base stubs (so ive been told...) so that would leave me at around 1200 installed. Thats a pretty big difference. Its just xmas is coming and i need this mod for the winter. Im going to feel like a giant *** spending 2200 on my car then buying my gf/family some socks and candy you know? Sigh wish i was rich lol.

what really sucks is i had the money until someone keyed my car but now it looks like im going to have to make sacrifices in order to keep my promise to myself of no debt modding. Plus im really getting tired of working extra hours.... Its starting to outweigh my desire for a perfect car...
Cusco makes two different unit's. The RS and the MZ. IMO, the MZ is the same as the Nismo unit.
The Cusco RS diff differs from the MZ by using special springs to influence or control the engagement of the clutch packs.
"The 1.5-way Type RS utilizes coil springs located between the pressure rings to develop initial torque and features full engagement during acceleration and partially under deceleration. The use of coil springs rather than cone plates help promote faster, smoother engagement, along with higher durability."
Break in a clutch type LSD is important, not doing it right pretty much guarantee's you'll have noise issues, or so I've been told. This would explain why some owner's are at peace with certain unit's and yet other's are driven to pull them off and sell them.

that makes it hard then bc if someone used the lsd and broke it in wrong then im just inheriting a faulty unit. Maybe i should just bite the bullet and pay for the quaife so i dont have these issues.
Carefull with aftermarket LSD's, unless its specificially engineered for the base model they wont fit without studs. Some manufacturers have a few different variants. The ATS fit the VLSD cars drop in, and the base cars with stub axles.
The ATS is nearly silent in terms of noise...just a tiny bit of tire scrub and absolutely no popping at all. I have heard the Nismo in two cars...both extremely loud. The Kusco is softer than the Nismo, but louder than the ATS. And the Quaife...once the fitment is solved, will be totally silent and seamless in all conditions.

Also quaife hasnt released anything that works yet. I think i did my mods backwards. If i had to do it over i would have done the rear end first then rims, exhaust etc. Right now my rear end is really squirly even under half throttle it breaks loose. Its pretty frustrating sometimes
My Nismo LSD is still annoying in parking lots even with Redline fluid, the 75w90 that comes with friction modifier. Will adding more friction modifier quiet it down? If so, are there any negative effects on performance?
My Nismo has been quite tolerable with Redline 75W-90 in it. With the supplied Veruspeed gear oil it was un bearable though. Of course that was during break in. Its started to get a bit louder again so I'll be changing it out with some Amsoil next weekend.
