Thumbs up SES code reader and reset tools

I just bought one of these. It works well and is not expensive at all. It reads the codes when you get an SES light and it will allow you to clear it as well.

Is that an LED display for the error code? That's the cheapest I have seen one of these. I was thinking about getting the $100. version, which does about the same thing. Thanks

It has a four digit led display for the code. It will cycle through the code reading 5 times. On round five it will reset the code or you can remove the reader prior to round 5 to leave the code active.

For $30 bucks you can't beat it.

Question

This is pretty cool. I was about to get a much more expensive one. So this one really works well with our Z's?

Sunset, how do you read the codes without a reader?

someone posted how to a while ago, but i cant seem to find the link. some of the info is on the technosquare website, but not all of it. so ill tell you...

1. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch “ON” and wait 3 seconds.
2. Repeat the following steps (2a and 2b) procedures quickly five times within 5 seconds.
2a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal (HARD).
2b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
3. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the CEL starts blinking.
4. The CEL will blink 10 times at a slow pace (1 blink per second). after that you will get a series of fast blinks (2 blinks per second) followed by a pause followed by fast blinks, pause, etc., and then it will start over with 10 slow blinks.

here's how to read it:

10 slow blinks, pause
2 fast blinks, pause
8 fast blinks, pause
10 fast blinks, pause
10 slow blinks, pause
repeat

2 fast blinks = 2, 8 fast = 8, 10 fast = 0 which would equal } 280. in that cause you could look it up in your service manual and find out that a 280 code means multiple cylinder missfire.

doing #2 and #3 takes almost dead on timing so i would suggest a stop watch of some sort. if the CEL doesnt start blinking after step #3 then you have to start over. hope this helps.

Yeap, I am aware of that process but it is so tedious and slow. In my case it was worth $28 to get a device that directly reads the codes and can reset them all within 1 minute.

And I don't need a stopwatch either................

It really works with our Z's! He has 2 types. One is clearly described for the Audi and Volkswagon so make sure to read the title and description carefully. Ours is the one that is generic.

Will it be okay if I keep the code reader plugged in at all times? So it will scan whenever any code comes on.

Will it fry anything?

The SES light will come on if you have an issue so keeping the reader on all the time is redundant. It should be ok though.

After the turbo install my CEL is on all the time with the random misfire code. I learned to ignore it. But I would like to have the display on all times just in case another code comes up that means trouble...
