Default Torque converters and how they work?

Can someone explain these things? Is it a worthwhile mod for my setup (2005 G35 Coupe 5AT).

Where do you buy them? Who makes them? Where is Jimmy Hoffa?

All important questions I need to know.

Thanks,

Jeff

Ask and you shall receive

Brett (knows Hoffa is buried in the endzone at the meadow lands even though the mythbusters say he isn't)

Great find! Thanks.

Now that I have read this, where can I purchase one?

I have a 5at and I think i would do a FD swap before I messed with replacing a TQ. Both mods will hurt your gas mileage but I think you will get bigger gains from the 3.5 final drive off a 6mt

How about the 3.9? Would that be much better than the 3.5?

Can I get a 3.5 here locally?

3.5 you need to find a Z in a salvage yard and just buy the rear carrier. Not sure if the 3.9's would work in the 5at, the general feeling on this forum is that they will not. It would give you much more agressive gearing and the 3.9 might be too agressive for our 5at's. So your top gear will be larger after this mod so you will lower your top speed and be at a higher rpm when cruising on the highway (thus worse gas mileage).

If you ever plan to go FI you most likely will not what that agressive final drive, though the TQ would still be a good mod. So if you are planning on doing FI in the future you may want to go back to the TQ idea.

Right now I am saving money and decided what I want to do. If I spend a few grand on rims, then another few grand on some NA mods I am already over how much it would cost to buy a turbonetics ST kit. I just keep telling myself I would rather have stock exhuast/etc + turbonetics ST than have a bunch of NA mods that dont really get me much. I have enough right now for the kit + install but I want to get a little saved up incase I ever have to get my engine rebuilt or any other repairs that might happen.
