Default Advance Timing on Stock ECU - Dealership says not possible?

I wanted to advance the timing on my Z by a couple of degrees. I currently have exhaust and intake only. I was told by another 350z that the dealership can advance the timing on the stock ECU by a couple of degrees and it might provide better performance. I decided to call my local dealership on the issue. I asked them if they could advance the timing on the stock 2005 ECU by a couple of degrees. The tech advisor told me yes, but only while it is hooked up to the Consult II program. He said that as soon as you unplug it, it goes back to factory settings. Can anyone confirm this? I was under the impression that you could change certain parameters of the stock ECU.

Yes I believe they can and it will hold . You also can purchase the OBD called Cipher....it can also advance timing by 2 degree's , and raise idle also . Plus data log all of the ECU's data...it around $400...search this site for it

So can I just go up there, tell them to advance it, and then hope for the best? How much timing should I advance if I have only intake and exhaust?

but what happens when you reset the ECU by pulling the battery overnight? I think it will revert back to stock settings.

I'm confused. What is that? A degrees counter of some sort?

Also, when you reset your ECU, do you have to leave the battery disconnected for a full 24 hours, or can you do the Technosquare style reset? Will it do the same thing?

Advancing the timing will give more hp & tq and if so about how much more could say someone with a few bolt-on's can gain *?*

For what it's worth, before I had the TS flash, I advanced the timing a couple degrees on the stock ECU with the Consult II and it reverted back within a few hours - did it several times over a 2 week period & each time it reverted. Just relating my experience with the stock ECU on an early-'04 model.

We've tested the advance w/ the Consult II and w/ Cipher and the settings ARE SAVED as long as you don't reset the ECU. You can reconnect months later and see the settings have not changed.

I have had timing added to my Z with many resets and it has never been erased. I used to reset my ECU each time I went to the track and when I bought my Cipher unit, guess what, it was still there!

Most dealers will charge you to do it. Kinda like running a diagnostic check. I have been to one where the tech hooked me up on the side for $20, but I don't think that is a common occurence.

The dealer where I'm at said they can only advance the timing two degrees with the the consult II even though it says 5 degrees, it will only do 2. I don't know how accurately true that is but that is what they told me.

You can only set it +/- 2 degrees and have it "update" when Consult-II is used. You can retard/advance more if you keep unit connected for diagnostic reasons.

The process takes about 2 min, most of which is the unit establishing a connection with the vehicle. If anyone doubts me I will make a video today showing this with our Consult-II unit. It does stay on the computer. I have seen issues with TS flashed computers where sometimes does not stay.

I swap between two ecus (both TS flashed), and I want to say that it keeps the updated idle and timing information even when disconnected. Do note: to do any of the automated relearning procedures timing and idle do have to be set to factory settings (no adjustments).
