I prefer the oil drop site for their extensive engine oil data. The info in your links was interesting though, thanks for sharing.

I've been reading on www.bobistheoilguy.com for about 5 years and that site is awesome.

Ah yes! I love that site as well. Puts to rest any doubts about dino oils and the 3K mi myth. That was some very good info on that comparo. Ive tried Amsoil but am not quite convinced. I have had excellent UOA with Castrol Syntec on both my Z's despite it not being "full synthetic". And for about $20 for 5qts at Wal-Mart you cant beat it I am kinda of curious about Mobil 1 though, I am getting a new 4 Runner in a few days and am thinking of trying out Mobil 1 to see how it goes.

I am actually going to try the Castrol Syntec blend for my next oil change. Mobil 1 is way too thin and Royal Purple seems to be a little thin also. I expect to burn some oil but the Mobil 1 was excessive as many other forum members have also reported. In general, I think full synthetic is too thin for me no matter what the brand is. I have some Amsoil on the shelf but i'm in no rush to use it. I expect good results and a lot less oil consumption with the Castrol Syntec!

I really like the Syntec, I may stick with that. From results Ive seen over at the oildrop forum unless you plan on going really long term with your OCI any oil will do. I never did try RP. Heres one of my UOA from Syntec, after a CA to VA drive. If I didnt drive the crap out of it or have warranty to keep up I could have pushed it 10K miles I think. Good stuff!

I will definitely give it a try. My (old) engine did not like Mobil 1. I have been doing OA's since I bought ther car and never had any really bad oil reports, but I still needed to have my engine replaced around 38K miles. Here is one of my reports from Blackstone Labs, it shows the history of my OA's.

Castrol is also alot cheaper than Amsoil and some of the other synthetics. My Amsoil was around $9.00 a quart!

Over the past 35 years I have used just about every synthetic out there, and there is only one I will ever use again, until something better comes along. I had been using Mobil 1 in my STi for about 7k miles, and every time it sat idle for any length of time, oil would creep into the combustion chambers and it would smoke when first started. Because of the horizontal, opposed cylinder design, i thought it was a fact of life. I read that Royal Purple smoothed out metal surfaces by filling out microscopic imperfections and provided a better sealing surface. I don't know if that is a good technical explanation, or if it is even true, but I switched, and within a few starts, the smoking problem had disappeared. I am absolutely 100% satisfied with it in my 25th Anniversary, especially with the high rpm starts it is subjected to (thanks Nissan). It is expensive, but I leave it in for 10k miles, changing the Mobil 1 filter every 5k and just adding a quart. FWIW

GMZ:

Post up your UOA of the Amsoil once you get the results. I'd be interested to see how it compares to the Syntec. I've got both oils on the shelf and this might help me decide which one goes in the Z next.

We have become big fans of Motul. Even their basic synthetic is true 100% synethic ester based oil, and have some fancy race oils as well. At just a buck or two more than Royal Purple or Redline, its good stuff....IMHO.

That said, for the type of engines we build, I have never seen any signs of excessive bearing wear, oil starvation, or any other oil related issues. The benifits of running quality synthetic oil probably show up at the 100K+ mark....none of our motors will likely ever seen those types of numbers, becuase people will sell their cars, or take their engines apart prior to that.

Was this test done with CASTROL SYNTEC or CASTROL SYNTEC BLEND?

Those group V oils are interesting. I've been thinking about putting in some Motul or Redline and see how they hold up compared to M1. The oil forums have gone on and on for years about PAO vs Ester base stock. My hesitation comes simply from the price.

Castrol Syntec 5W-30, I have used the blend on my last Z, but I did no UOA's. My dad uses the blend in his Suburban with about 20 yrs and 180K on the clock, still starts up like new. Been using it since it came out. Id run the blend for 2 OCI's then switch to full Syntec.

It might be best to break in a new machine with non synthetic then switch

I plan on running the Castrol Syntec Blend for maybe 5 oil changes and then switching to full synthetic. I wil be keeping a close eye on the oil level. My main concern is having another consumption problem.

Good ---because future consumption probs can many times be accredited to earlier poor breakin proceedures

interesting info.

However, this is date 3-4 years back which is not likely to continue valid since companies upgrade/change their oil's grading.

However, it's interesting concept.

I'm currently running AMSoil ASL 5W-30for the first time and just hit 5K mark. Though it recommends 25K for NA car, however, i'll only go for 10K to be on the safe side.

I'm the opposite over the last 16 years and 308,000 miles it has been a pleasure [on my 1990 Q45] to use 82 x 6 quarts = ~~ 500 quarts of mostly conventional oil Valvoline 10w30 and 10w40........anywhere from 60 to 90 day intervals.

Obviously if you change even cheap oil frequently it does the job.

We recently junked one with 450,000 miles on conventional oil.
