Hey Guys,

I dont have the shifter (maybe someday I will get it) but I do recall that there is a lock screw on the shift ****. I think it is on the front of the **** (closest to the engine) under a cover on the ****. IF you took the shift **** off without loosening this it may have backed it out and causing your rattle.

Just thinking for you guys . . .I hate when something like this happens.

Haey thanks, but no set screw... just cecked the service manual: section MT pg 10.

I had a little luck this morning by putting the seat (metal washer thingy) between the bevel and the threads, but the plastic ring or something near it still buzzes. I keep getting it quieter, just not quite there yet. Haven't had time today, too nice out

Default shifter

I really like the new shifter, I do get some rattle in first and low torque demand, but find the gated 3/4th position more than worth any noise!
The problem I have had is getting the **** tight again, get it to a certain point and the leather wants to twist up, even if I hold it with one hand and turn the **** with the other.
One thing I did to minimize noise was to tighten the bottom bolt and nut pretty tight, it shifts harder, but way more precise.

rktjhn,

One thing Dweeb might want to add to the instructions is the metal washer (11) and rubber washer (10) you need to take off the old shifter. I'll see if I can get the piture out of the service manual posted ... but, the manual says the rubber should be replaced every time and though with the way Dweeb cut his stick, you can live without the metal peice, it raises the tighten point so that you are not squshing the leather boot so much. The **** screws down to the metal stop sqeezing the rubber washer between. You are also supposed to use locktight on the threads. I still haven't completely eliminated the buzz but it only happens above 4 grand now and not so loud. I have totalled the rubber washer with all the removals and re-installs but couldn't make it home in time to get another tonight... tried a piece of rubber hose (and a few other things) but still haven't found the right combination. Might try to tighten the linkage connection a little more but only as a last resort, don't want to over compress that o-ring (9.4 - 10.8 ft/lbs).

Hey Dweeb,

Just want to add one thing, though I should be in bed. It seems like somehow the slight increase in vibration... maybe not even an increase, is just turned into sound by the little number plate on top of the shifter, I still get no noticeable noise without the ****, but while I'm driving, if I start to put the **** on.. after just a few turns I can start to hear it. The more I tighten the **** the better the buzz is vocalized. All the sound comes right from the metal top on the shifter... something seems to come right up the stick and out the top. I'll sleep on it some more. ttyl.

P.S. Who started this thread, how's your's goin, and where's the fellow who ordered the new plastic socket? zzzzzzzz

If you suspect the buzz is from the ****, why not try some "plumber's tape" on the threads before you screw it down? FYI plumber's tape is a teflon tape that is used around the threads of pipes to keep them from leaking. Just an thought.

well, i haven't had this problem with my shifter yet because it isn't installed. I am waiting for them to replace my tranny...

But, i did have the same exact problem with my stock shifter/shift **** assembly. On mine, it was from the spring preload. If i pushed the shift **** down as if i was going to shift into reverse, it would stop. So, i just screwed on the **** REALLY tight. Now, it doesn't happen any longer....

I am the one who is going to replace the white plastic socket controller. It is ordered and will be here Friday(hopefully). I have tried 3 different types of Momo shifters and they all rattled. So I don't think its the shifter ****. I do agree with you that when I removed the ****, there's no noice. I believe the weight of the **** magnafies the vibration at the linkage. I went to Lowes and found some nylon washers and rubber o rings. I plan on replacing the white plastic ring-inserts on both sides fo the linkage around the metal tube where the bolt goes through. Hopefully the rubber would dampen and absorb some vibration. I won't do anything until I have the plastic socket replaced. So good luck to those who are working on theirs and let us know if you come up with anything that works. I will post mine as soon as I am done.

I didn't get to try anything today. The last change yesterday included a fair amount of lock tight so the next attempt will probably require the rag and wrench to get the **** off again I still have to get a couple of the rubber washers. I like the plumbers teflon idea, I've got a tin of that... think that may fit the bill to eliminate the locktite and help dampen any vibrations which might be coming from the threads. I still feel think the vibration is in the stick and the **** just acts as the diaphram (speaker).. . If true I need to work on damping the connection at the linkage... still meditating, oooohm

Wags, I am with you. The only thing is I wish I have the new white socket holder now. When I get under the car one more time, I hope that would be my last and final attempt to fix the rattle. Dweeb should be home soon, I actually feel sorry for him since he can't do anything about it being away from home. So Dweeb, good luck when you get home. Look forward to hear from you.

Default Teflon tape

Two thoughts on teh teflon tape...

1) The teflon tape is slippery and might cause the handle to try to back off from vibration. Think of teflon tape as anti-locktite.

2) If the **** is screwed on tight there won't be any rattling between the **** and the threads. I doubt the tape will change anything.

You might as well try it, but I suspect that won't fix it.

Ok, Guys and Gals
As promised, I am going to be home early this afternoon. I will look into it today, and give an update later on tonight.

Wow, that was FAST after being away from home traveling.

I can;t wait to see what you came up with, but I just had to say I am impressed with your reaction to this issue!

Thumbs up Problem solved

AndyB, thank you for your words...

Ok kiddies,
I have installed the new Q-Shifter “FIX” package on a brand new Z, earlier today. I just got a email from him saying that he loves it, and that there is no excessive/vibration/rattle “noise” coming from the shifter.
you can read his post here
https://my350z.com/forum/showthread....827#post289827

So..... I will be making the “Fix kits” this coming week. And will be sending them out to everyone who has purchased my shifter by next Friday.
The kit consists of new lower bushings and a “spacer” tape. When you install these, there should be no more noise.
Again, sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you....

Thanks Dweeb.. I need some sleep too. Haven't even got to drivre the thing for two days... have a big event this weekend and been busy. One note of interest: Since I trashed the rubber washer under the ****, and the service manual says "replace every deinstall".. I ordered a new one. They wanted $14.... he said he'd let me have it for $7. I thought that was "real generous". I sure hope that means there is more in the package than just the rubber washer. But either way, you can bet I won't order that part from Nissan again

Have a weekend!

I have also had all these problems and tried many of these fixes, including the plumbers tape that did nothing. I will wait for the fix kit.
