Default Ultimate Racing Turbo Kit

I just had a brief email exchange with Darryl at Ultimate Racing and they are developing a Turbo Kit for the 350Z. He didn't have any details on the kit yet but, he did mention that they are targeting an early summer release. Their website is www.ultimate-racing.com.

First off, Ultimate racing seems like a very nice company. The customer service seems top notch from what I have seen on the S2000 boards and they offer products at a fairly reasonable price.

However, they tune their turbo kits with Greddy's emanage, and well, its like a one size fits all kinda deal. If your car is factory turbo (Vishnu tuning for EVO's and WRX's, APR for or it is a chip for A4's and S4's) or if your car is close to stock naturally aspirated (Hondata for K20's aka RSX type S and RSX motors) you can get away with a one map fits all but even then everything is not 100% optimized for performance because some hp must be given up to ensure safety (probably a bit more conservative timing and more fuel up top to prevent pre-det). Once you begin turboing cars that are meant to be Naturally Aspirated, the tolerances till pre-det are much lower. So things that seem small such as elevation differences and subtle differences in boost can cause havoc.

As a result, there is one guy who has messed up his engine (the cause nor the problem has been pinpointed yet, he has a ticking noise but his compression is fine from what I understand) after puting on UR's turbo kit for the S2000. I really think the guy missed the tell tale signs of pre-det. Before you blame it on the 11.1:1 compression, there are other things that you need to worry about before worrying about compression and with good gas, a rich mixture of air fuel (I'd say stick around 12:1, although I saw a S2000 with a supercharger run as lean as 13.8!!!! This mixture got him the most horsepower cause the leaner mixture but I dont know if I would trust it on the street), and retarded ignition timing, all stock cars can get away with around at least 6-8 psi cause to make sure that cars are reliable, all manufacturers leave some room for tolerance. Although I feel as though this was the guy's fault because he hit the throttle a couple times even when UR told him to back off until they figure it out, I still feel that you cant have a one size fits all for aftermarket turbo kits. It's a good kit, but I think taking it to a dyno with a wideband o2 sensor and making slight modifications to the maps would be a wise decision.

On a great note, UR has been trying to help his guy all along, even gave the dude his cell phone number to call if something was going wrong. Also, the kit itself seems to be very nice. Just please make sure the air fuel ratios are right please?

I like this company already. They did a dyno run on their turbo for the S2000. They videotaped it and then with the camera still on walked over to the computer screen and showed the actual graph readout with the numbers. I like that.
