Default How much oil should come out in an oil change?

I did an oil change a few days ago and I noticed that 3.5 quarts came out. This happened when my car was on jackstands at an angle. I was wondering if this is normal. I put 5 quarts in with a new oil filter this time (its the first time im changing it myself- i had the service pack)

To answer your question.....How much oil should come out in an oil change?... the answer is... The amount of oil that is in the oil pan.

Drain your oil when your car is warm, Jack it at an angle to get the most oil out. Change your filter, add your 5 qts or 4 5/8 if your not going to refilter. Check it often if you feel there is a problem.

The bottom line is this.......Dont wait with a container marked in OZs to see what your oil consumption is, chk your stick.

If there is a problem with consumption, address it.

Warranty requires that you constantly maintain oil [all lubricants] full level [+-1/2 quart] even between changes until Nissan acknowledges [thru dealer testing] that engine is consumming excess.

The sump volume is so very very tiny on these, that constant vigilence is required!

Actually, 5 qts in a V-6 is a nice amount, I run 6 with a Pan and am a believer in running 10 if there was a way. None the less, everything being relative, Keep an eye on it and get used to doing it yourself.

Its easier to prove you Fukced up than it is to prove Jiffy Lube Fukced up---Point is, dont trust others.

You still have powertrain warranty, take it to dealer and start the consumption test.

I was on two jackstands on the front so maybe 15-20 degrees at most. I check the oil every 1000 miles and it seemed fine, but the dipstick is difficult to use

Good idea eazzzy. The drip is on the passanger side right? Ill check the oil level today, its been about 1000 miles. I was at perfect level when i filled it up (5 quarts with filter change) so if it has changed i'd know by now.

No chit old man, but you know how it goes on the forums. Sometimes you have to fish for answers when the obvious isn't so obvious.
What if he had it jacked on the passenger side, set his stands and left it like that? Remaining oil could have been retained on the driver's side of the pan.

True ----After 35 years changing oil, I tend to assume. In a normal situation, if the car is level, thats fine. I actually jack the drivers side for 2 reasons....One, to get all the oil out and Two, To save time. Kinda like a one man Pit Crew

One man pit crew FTW. I usually jack it on the pasenger side just to get the extra height, then get under it with the creeper board. After the pan drains I'll lower the car to get the rest out, then raise it back up again to get under it again. I've never thought about lifting from the driver's side. I suppose that what eliminate one step. I'll try it next time and see what type of working space I have to work with.
