Default How Fast.... Is Fast?

Kind of an odd question I know.. But it got me thinking..

Everyone comes on here asking "what do i need to hit x whp". But most people have never been in a Z with there targeted HP. So how do you really know what your shooting for?

My Old Skyline had 250whp. It felt LOADS quicker than my Z due to weight and the kick in the *** from a 2535 turbo on a 2.5L engine.

So how fast is 350whp in a Z? How fast is 400whp in a Z? Or better yet how fast does it FEEL.

Im just really curious. Can my Z give me back that exciting feel when i romp on it in a straight line? Ive really missed that.. People always wonder why i putt along at 50km on the straights then gun it through the corners. I want my excitement back on both counts.

Well im making 400whp right now, I love it, but pretty much useless when going under 55mph unless you are on some kind of drag radial. It definatly feels good for a 3-5th gear pull to 140 tho. The torque is great on the Turbonetics cars, it makes peak torque at like 4k i think... I dont have my graph off hand but when it spools up, its a hard hit. Throw you back in the seat for sure.

I know what you mean. I have driven a 944 turbo with just under 300hp (at the wheels) That were WAY faster than my z. I figured that I want to be around that power to wieght ratio. I need around 350-375hp(rwhp).

a turbo car will always feel way faster than an n/a car

at least my wrx felt extremely faster than my Z.... then i raced one and pretty much crushed it.

I think its because in the n/a car's the torque is right there, on a turbo car when you punch you dont feel it for a few moments, making it "appear" faster.

I'd say if you're interested in a good butt dyno feeling, slap a turbo on her even at 7psi it'll feel loads faster

Z's have virtually no Turbo lag with any of the popular TT kits. With the ST typically there is more lag though so yeah what you say is true for the most part.

Your "but dyno" measures jerk, not acceleration. So things feel fast when you have a large jerk (derivative of acceleration, as acceleration is the derivative of velocity) aka, if there is a large change in acceleration (like when the turbo kicks in if there was a fair amount of turbo lag) then the car feels really fast, even though it may be slower in reality.

As stupid as it may sound.. Im more interested in feeling fast than going fast..

Sure I want a fast car.. Sure id like to be able to give other guys a run for there money at the track.. But 99% of the time im driving for the car for enjoyment.. Not trying to beet that Taurus next too me to the next set of lights...

With that said.. How is the power delivery on a SC 350z? I've driven/owned numerous turbo cars but never even sat in a SC one.

BabyZiLLa, I know exactly what you are looking for. I am not into street racing, nor do I ever see myself going to the track. I drive my car for the enjoyment, as well as my passenger's enjoyment. I have been thinking VERY prematurely about a vortech over a single or twin turbo because I feel it might give me more 'useable' boost in my daily driving.

Of course since my FI plans are not really into development yet, I haven't been doing any real research yet. I could have it all wrong, and will discover the truth as I do my homework.

skylines are pigs. even the r32 weighs rougly 3660lbs. so the lighter part...now i dont think so. but all in all, a turbo will feel faster, due to the feeling of the spool up, as opposed to the instant n/a power

ahhh.. I dont know what kind of KG to LBS conversion your working with but a GTS-T R32 weighs 1320kg.. Now if i passed math that comes to 2904lbs. ALOT lighter than your claim.

Not to mention 99% of them have HICAS ripped out which saves another 45lbs.

But that isnt the point here..

here it clamims 1480/1500kg and in a show i was watching a bone stock r32 tipped the scales at 3668lbs. but from my understanding, the rb motor is extremely underrated. it claims 280bhp, but actually makes more at the wheels than claimed at the crank. thats just from my readings and understanding, and from freinds who have rb26's. but you say you had a skyline, so ill imagine you know more than i do, eitherr way, great car. glad to see your stickin to the nissan roots!

Think you might be getting your models a little mixed up.. No worries.

R32 GTS-T, RWD, RB20 (2L Single Turbo). 1320kg / 2904lbs
R32 GTR, AWD. RB26 (2.7L Twin Turbo). 1430kg / 3146lbs

There no Lotus Elise but there definately not a 3600lbs pig..

Those values to change slightly depending on your source.. But when i took mine through a weight station i weighed 2867lbs. That was with HICAS removed.

As for the RB26 rating.. It was rated at 276hp due to the Japanese Gentleman agreement between the manufactures.. Actual power was 310-320bhp depending on your source again. (keeping in mind these where 89-93 numbers.. No R32 running on an original engine will be putting out the same numbers these days.

Fast is OPINION to every individual and their experiences. What I think i sfast now isnt what I thought it was 4 years or 1 year ago. Fast is when you go WOT in your car and YOU get excited, lol, for some it could take 240whp others 600whp. Who cares as long as your happy.

I was waiting for one of you 500+whp guys to come in and tell me to quit being a panzy..

I guess i need to find some boosted Z's in my area to tag a ride along. Its not really all about the speed to me.. I guess a good way of explaining it is a BMW. The M3/M5 feel fast.. They feel like an exciting car from the stiff clutch to the suspension to the steering response..

You slap an LS1 in a Grand AM and you've got some power.. But you sure as hell still dont have that "feeling"..

if you want to feel fast, don't get a vortech unless you plan on really digging in and upgrading the kit (2.87 pulley etc)
