does this screw up my cruise control at all?

 

If you have an automatic, cruise control will not work. If you have an 6MT, it will work fine.

so funny story about those gears. Me and My buddy who races in nasa ptb put in 4.083 gears in his car right before the last event at barber motorsports park. Wellll.... turns out those gears get reallllly hot when under racing conditions and it melted every seal in the diff. The only way we knew was everytime the car started braking hard for corners it would let out a small puff of smoke. Well it soon started getting slightly larger so we evenutally got black flaged. Pulled in and started to change the diff out with another stock one and it was so hot that we tried spraying it with water trying to cool it down. Nothing helped we just had to have gloves and towels and absorbant mats soaked in water to get it out. Now we may have built it alittle too tight but even if it was alittle bit tight it still got way toooo hot. Just thought id let you know my experence its a great mod just be sure it doesnt get too hot.

 

tbese gears don't get any hotter than stock ones. Either the lash was set too tight, which is the opposite of what you want for track use, or, if its a more track oriented car, a rear diff cooler is recommended...the stock rear diff has a tendency to burp fluid when it gets hot, even on a bone stock rear (it's happened to me before before I had gears installed)

 

yeah were thinking might have been too tight, so were going to take it apart agian and rebuild it and install a cooler. We did have the problem with the diff. burping fluid so we just extended vent tube up higher. Thanks for the info. dreading tearing it apart, its really really burnt.

 

I hear ya...it's going to stink, literally

If you can have a choice to shim it on the loose side, take that route. Will be a touch whiney, but keeps things cooler. Also, consider the type of fluid you are running too, esp if doing hardcore track days in hot temps.

The burping thing is common unfortunately - the rear finned cover helps alot, but a full out cooler makes it go away totally

 

yeah were working on finding a pump and a surge tank and what not to install a full pump and cooler assmebly.

 

Any recommended rear differential coolers?

 

Great write up! This really makes me want to save up now. Everyone always talks about what exhuast or intake. Really people should be talking about this more.

Note: it was 100 deg at the track, so that didn't help with overheating issues.

 

One question though. Do you have to buy something to match the speedometer to the new gearing speeds. I know on the S2K they made something called a yellowbox you had to wire in.

 

Nope. Just get the install kit that coordinates with your mileage and you're good to go.

 

How much are the gears by themselves? Do they need to be cryo treated or are they pretty reliable?

Just an update, after a couple of hundred miles of spirited driving, you're going to want to grab a tune to raise the rev limit.

Getting a UpRev tune this coming month.

Other than that, gears have been treating me well!

 

Update.... these gears are still by far the best investment I've put on my car. They are a treat, and with the weather nice and stickier tires, let's just say when I gun it it feels like when those Star Trek space-ships go into overdrive lol.

Every penny worth it! Hasn't given me any problems, car runs fine -- gas mileage is just about the same honestly. Negligible at best.

For anyone still having doubts....I say do it. I've been surprising HR-Z's, it's quite funny to see them get caught off guard
