Default LSD on base?

This may have been talked about already and if it has I am sorry. I am stuck getting a base model because noone can find an enthusiast model. So my question is, how much does it cost to get the stock LSD put on the base? How much are the stock HID's and where can I get this stuff? Also, what other LSD's do I have to choose from and how hard are these to install. Thanks.

P.S. I might just go steal this stuff off of my girlfriends G35...lol

why not go with an aftermarket LSD (just an idea in case you didn't know one was available).

I wouldn't get a base model, it's too much stuff to add on later. It it's probably cheaper to get it as a package and have it under warranty. I think your dealer is BSing you. Go to Nissans website, build your own car then use the locate feature. If you're interested PM me and I'll hook you up with my dealer, he found the car I wanted in no time!

It all depends on your needs and what you're doing with the car. If you're going to be going aftermarket for alot of items on the car then why pay the extra for something you'll be changing later on? If yer happy with stock then the package works out for you.

Well looking at the differences in the book:
Traction Control System
limited slip differential
HID lights
aluminum petals
Cruise Control
Homelink
Auto-dimming rearview
illuminated vanity mirrors

Or like Maniac said get what you need...

limited slip differential (that's cheap to purchase and install (quaife LSD vs. viscous, I like the quafie better.) and is a better product)
HID lights (an item I purchased because it was one of the things I wanted. Super cheap through a junkyard that had a Z that was totalled from the rear.)
aluminum petals ($5 item, no big concern and easy to change)
Cruise Control (here's one of the items I miss, I WILL be installing a CC module later)
Homelink
Auto-dimming rearview (I've had one of these and it was more or less a nuisance.)
illuminated vanity mirrors (I brush my teeth, comb my hair, and shave at home, why do I need these? But the g/f has mentioned she'd like to have one for doing those makeup touchups...)

Or like Maniac said get what you need...
for instance, for me this list actually contains some very irritating items that conflict with my driving style. So once again it all goes back to what you need/want from the car.

Yea, I know LSD's are available aftermarket but I don't know what is the best type and brand and how much they cost. I had no idea some of the stuff below didn't come on the base. I will try the Nissan website and see what I can find. The best price I got from the dealer on a Black base model is 26,800. Is this reasonable?

Traction Control System-I know this doesn't come on the car but I would never use it.

limited slip differential-This will suck because I really enjoy taking the car through turns

HID lights-I can just replace my stock bulbs with a good plasma light or source some other HID unit.

aluminum pedals-this is easy to fix

Cruise Control-I had no idea cruise control wasn't included on the base model. Yea, this will be annoying.

Homelink-I have no need for this

Auto-dimming rearview-I can get one later but I will have my windows tinted so there really is no need for this

illuminated vanity mirrors-I didn't know about this either. Would be nice to have this maybe.

I'd go with the Base model then, like Maniac said, you can get a better LSD later. Check the Nissan site, "build" your Z then click on "Locate Vehicle" expand the search radius out until you find it. Then go to your dealer (with the print out of the location of your Z) and tell him that's what you want. Dealers don't like to have to get a car from somewhere else, they are trying to sell you what is on their lot. But they will do it.

The LSD will probably cost around a grand if it comes from nismo then another 5ish hours of labor time @ usually around 80 bucks an hour. I also have the base model, ad I just put 20x10"s in the back which have significantly improved grip, but I will also be putting a LSD in the rear end to get rid of the koo kid one wheel burnout . I personally don't need to get a fancy LSD, the nismo one should suffice, but Im thinking about looking around a junkyard first for a wrecked Z and pull it off that or something before buying from the dealer (ouch). Also I remember that the stock LSD has something like a 3.5xx final drive ratio, and my base ratio is actually more around 3.8xx, I wonder if I can swap out the gears in between the two to preserve the accleration that my car has already lost from going with 20" rims. A 3.5xx fd would make my car accelerate even slower, i need shorter gears not taller! Look at around 1500 bucks for a LSD from the dealer.

If you do a search under 'LSD' you'll find more discussion regarding diffs.

Quaife isn't working on a differential for the Z as of yet. Nismo's is similar to Kaaz; that is, it's a clutch-type set up, meaing it may be a bit too aggressive for the street.

IIRC, the base model uses a diffferent differential housing than the LSD-equipped models. So upgrading the base will cost you more than you think...

If you swap out the open LSD for some other type of differential, you'll need to change the oil seals and the differential bearing. All told, another ~$100 in parts, which isn't much, compared to labor.

The Kaaz is shipped in 100% locking form, sound's like your install shop did not reduce it to a proper street locking rate of around 60%. They do this by swapping the clutch plates around, theirby lowering the locking rate. And vastly improving the diff's streetability.

The Kaaz can be had for as little as $731, add the mentioned parts for non LSD equipped cars and around $400 for install labor. Put's you in the $1200 range.

Differential bearings should always be changed out whenever a differential is changed. Daytona, wasn't it you who had the base model and posted that the differential housing was different and had to be swapped?

Nah, it wasn't the housing.... I can't remember the name of the part. I want to say it was the bearings. Whatever it was, it was pretty inexpensive. I have to check my records.

Gcoupe, Even reducing the locking rate won't make the diff whisper-quiet or silent. You'll know it's there occasionally, because you'll hear it and feel it working.

If you want I have the stock LSD out of the track model we turned into a race car. Doesn't have any miles on it other than to the car builder. PM me if interested.

I'll return the favor you did for me, the part numbers you gave me are 2 of the following:
(Nissan part numbers btw)
Oil Seal: (38342-P9010)
Differential Bearing: (38440-0C000)
The Oil Seal is $6.37 per, and the Bearing is $47.15 per.

And on the not being whisper-quiet or silent thing, I know, point taken. But with no torsen type's on anyone's drawing boards, it's still the only game in town if you want the benefit's they deliver over and above viscious limited slips.
