Air Intake Temperature
Quick question....! Does anyone know or anyone with a N/A engine with sometype of datalog or Camp2 type thing know what idle operating temp is...
Or if you been say 50 miles doing about 70mph....
Today the outside temp was about 24 C and at idle I was at about 52C at the air intake temp...
Then after the 50 miles at 70mph intake temp was about 34C...
Am running a K+N typhoon with no air box, vented bonnet (hood!!) and recently had manifolds (headers) fitted but I dont think they are wrapped...
Could the unwrapped manifolds be causing more heat than before?
Also on a friends car, on the same journey, you could touch his AEM long CAI tube and not burn youself... On the CAI tube of my Typhoon you could BBQ steaks on it (couldnt touch it with your bare hands and was retaining heat for some time....
Opinions, thoughts, actions?

I have a twin turboed motor. When I am not running boost AIT run about 10 degs F above ambient when running around town and 7-8 degs F while driving down the highway. 15- 20 deg F above while idling. That's with the ambient temp around 95 deg F.
My data comes from monitoring Cipher intake temps. I have also disabled the throttle body warmer because in South Houston temps rarely ever get below freezing. Hope this helps. I know having a big intercooler makes a difference, but your AIT temps seem to be running high. If you want to lower them I would definitely wrap the headers. Also you stated that you have removed the airbox, does you new setup suck air from in front of the radiator? If not, then your motor may be inhaling heated air from your engine bay.

I have a scan gauge which pulls the intake temp (along with other data) from the OBD2 connection. I see up to a 20 degree F spike when sitting in traffic other than that I average about 5-10 degrees higher than the out side temp depending on my speed. I assume this is from heat soak as the engine bay is obviously going to be warmer than the outside air? This is with the stock airbox BTW
Looks like you need an Airbox or a tru CAI injen style which will suck up water and hydrolock your engine (from experience)

Brazen, Jebz thanks for the reply, appriciate it. Yeh the typhoon puts a scoop infront of the rad, but without the box am sure this is now wasted as the cold is being mixed with the very hot air causing above average warm air... also the hot is probably forming a barrier against the cold... Think that the box needs to go back on!! And also wrap the intake tube and headers (i asked the guy that fitted them to do them but he didnt!!)
Jebz, how did you get hydrolock? We have some pretty bad rain over here and noone with a long tube has suffered... Have been driving in sheet rain over here with a vent right ontop of the CAI and not a stutter (infact the car ran better!!) Just wondering
DavidV, thanks for your input! Just noticed your mods and looks like you have the same as me and IIRC baltimore has pretty much the same temps as the UK, you suffered the same? Headers + intake wrapped? Any idea on your temps?

Dont wrap the headers, spend the money and get them jet coated. Wrapped headers can cause the flanges to crack. Also, I data logged my AIT temperature using cipher and I have a CSV if you want to take a look at it. Let me know.
The injen CAI sits about 3- inches off the bottom of the bumper and i went through a 7-inch puddle. suck suck spit engine locks... luckily it didn't damage my engine just needed new plugs. I put on my stock air box and soaked the stock filter with water before the mechanic got it to cover my a$$ in case i needed to use my insurance for a new motor.

freedonutss, thanks for that.... yeh I should have had it done before they were fitted, dont want another 6 hour remove / refit bill though...!! Think heat wrap will do them and if they crack will then get them coated when they are re welded!! Should be able to do them when the car is on stands!
Good thinkin Jebz.... if I do get a longtube then I will make sure not to hit 7 inch puddles!! I thought that the some of the longtubes have water bypass / or at least something that takes the water away before it hits the TB?

THe only mod I have done is a bag of ice on top of the intake plenum.
Lol!!! I did think of coming up with a dry ice mod!!
If I had have done that yesterday I think I my have been getting hyrolock through the plenum! It would have stayed frozen for about 2 mins!

If you decide to wrap the headers, post up the difficultly. I got my DC SS Headers installed a while ago and yes temps went up 10-20°F at idle. Shoulda Jet Coated but didn't. I looked at wrapping the headers but tight spaces and a lack of promising results has stopped me.
Post up and let us all know how it works out if you end up wrapping them.
