Default oil consumption: dealer to replace short block. how to get long block?

So I just got back from the dealer where they did the oil consumption test. They said Nissan is allowing a short block replacement. I did a little research through these forums and it seems some people reported that they replaced the short block, but they are still having the same problem. I also read that some people convinced Nissan to replace the entire engine.

How do you go about doing this? It seems like starting with, "Well, I read on the internet..." seems a bit weak.

I have used a lemon law lawyer in the past that got me some excellent results. I'm gonna call them tomorrow and see what they say.

What am I looking for in the TSB? I googled a bit and all I saw were something similar to what I copied below. I can't find the solution to the problems.

Well I certainly do not want to make any comments that may not meet your standards.

So I told my dealer about the TSB. They said Nissan refused the whole engine replacement because the TSB does not include the model of my car (Enthusiast). This is true. I think the TSB includes Track and Performance models. So I can't really argue with the dealer since Nissan corporate is calling the shots. This doesn't really make any sense since I know they all have the same engines. The service tech even told me he'd rather replace the whole engine since it's a lot easier than the short block. Any advice?

sounds like you are at their mercy amigo. I would just just let them do it, if the problem persists.. well, it's their wasted labor. are they giving you a free car to drive in the mean time?

I'd say don't worry about it. A new short block will take care of any problem with the consumption and includes the wear items that cause the most problems. A long block would be great but don't get carried away with getting one.

yea, hopefully the short block fixes the issue. The other issue is my powertrain warranty expires in March. It might be a good idea to get that extended warranty.

If you have a 2005 Enthusiast, you do not have a Rev-up, which is what that TSB covers, IIRC. If you can get your short-block replaced regardless, I wouldn't make a scene of it. The DE motor did not have near as many issues with oil burning as the Rev-Ups did/do.

+1...it was the 2005 yellow anniversary edition that came with the revup engine...

Actually, it was the 2005 6MT anniversary edition and the track models that came with the RevUp engine.

My 2005 Track model has had no problem with oil consumption, but there are others who haven't been as lucky (and generally have been more vocal).

So I got my car back from the dealer yesterday....with the long block replaced!!!

Apparently, they tried to install the short block, but found they would have to machine some parts so Nissan authorized the long block to be replaced after all.
