Default Keep DE go HR or go SR?

I can't seem to decide which way to go. I'm having a lot of fun with my 05 touring but I'm starting to want more HP. I gained 21 WHP from a recent Osiris tune w/ bolt-ons (241RWHP) but I at least want to be above 250WHP and eventually reach 300HP.

I'm reading about HR owners getting 260+ HP with simple bolt-ons...!

  • I don't mind buying a 07+ HR Z but at the same time that's an expensive project car!

  • I can build my DE to 260+ HP but for the money I spend I might as well buy a 07 Z!

  • I can buy a s15 SR20 black top and achieve 260+ whp with a lighter engine and larger aftermarket turbo.

I'm leaning more towards the SR20 swap to be honest. I'm sure it would be cheaper than buying $1K HR parts or DE .

Can I get some opinions please?

No HR is going to make 260whp on Dave's dyno bone stock. Maybe mid 240's at best. I'd stick with what you got and make some changes.

Sup Mike? It's been awhile man. I just don't want to waste money. Some HR owners are claiming 260 HP gains with simple bolt ons... That's decent for appx the same amount of money I've spent on my Z.

I don't want to go F/I with my DE and if I did go FI then I would go with the SR swap for easier tunability and aftermarket support...

can't make up my @#$^ing mind...

What is your end goal? Keep in mind that some parts made for s13, s14, and s15 may or not fit with that engine in the confines of the z engine compartment.

My end goal is to have a 300WHP car. My immediate goal was to have at least 250WHP. I didn't achieve that on Dave's dyno dynamics.

That's surprising to hear about the engine bay. That wide Z bay should be able to hold a SR or RB. Anyways, I would probably stroke the SR20 to 2.2 but regardless of the engine I have (DE, HR, or SR) I'm going to buy Tomei Powered products for it.

I am not saying that it won't fit, but I just thought I would make it a point of attention since so few have made the swap. 300whp will be tough. You can get there on a light N/A build with a DE. 300whp on Dave's dyno might be another story though. That'll be tough.

im sure your aware performance isnt cheap. do your research. if money is a problem keep the car you have, get some bolt-ons, get a tune. Prepare to spend...

A bit vague but thanks. Money isn't a big issue but I do want to get the most bang-for-the-buck. I'm starting to think that I should continue engine building then go FI - I would knock any HR or 370 outa the water.

Ironically, I don't want to buy a LS engine but after looking at the turbo solutions - Greddy for example - I would be paying over $6K!

How much was your TT setup Viva?

save for FI man, there was a guy who posted on here not to long ago that posted pics of his build and that took him years!

my build was well over 6k+ but less than 10k. im nothing compared to other members who have wayyyyyy more power than me. if I learned anything from these guys is, no tune is reliable, especially on a daily driver.

Well, how reliable is the DE anyways? I mean, once I go FI then I'm keeping the Z for the next 6-10 years and eventually buying another as a daily.... so if I do keep it for that long I might as well build the engine this summer and FI that baby next.

I'm getting more and more convinced to stick with my DE. Good thread, thanks everyone.

Having a DD is always advised if you go FI in my book. People go 20000+ miles with no issues others go 20........it is always nice to have a "safety" car is something goes wrong.
