Searched but did not find my answer. Saw that RCdash had his tank located near the intercooler at one point but seemed to have relocated it back.

I would like to increase the size of my tank and relocate it. Problem is, not a lot of room in my engine bay. I do however have room in the bumper area on the drivers side where i had an oil cooler before.

I have found some 5x6x3 rectangular tanks that look like they would fit.

Question is that is it ok to locate the tank below the radiator cap? Currently the overflow tube goes to the bottom of the overflow tank but the top vent port on the tank is higher than the port off the radiator. If i relocate the tank the latter will not be true.

I mounted mine on the bumper beam, def lower than the cap. No problems, just make sure you get a proper tank ( one with the hose at the bottom, like the factory). I have a Weapon R. Getting the coolant level is a little tricky, but you'll get it.

 

Yeah i currently have a bottom fed tank.

what do you mean by getting the coolant level is tricky? You mean filling it and keeping the tube full or trying to find the balance between min/max and normal fill level so that you do not overfill or empty the tank?

 

Yeah, trying to find the balance. Not that hard though.

 

i was reading another thread and it stated the issues came from not having the overflow not be the highest point in the system.

 

^you talking about that thread with the aps turbos boiling the coolant when the flow gets low?

 

The higher the better obviously. The Z is a PITA for overflows. It wasn't until my last build that I finally found a good place but it wasn't practical for 90% of the Z owners and required an automatic transmission.

this has nothin to do with anything, but I've been wondering if the rate jdm will fit with the Crawford bar or not. And I couldn't find a pic of both until now!

Did you have to mod the cover?

 

I had to modify the Rare JDM to fit. Ill sell you this one cheap, it is kinda crude.

I actually just got done making new mounts for my new harness cover that relocate it fwd some and prevent modification. The new mounts are 10x easier to install (rare jdm dropped the ball by not offsetting the screws).


Yeah a typical tank just has nowhere to go. I have a ton of room by the intercooler.

Dont tell here but I cam redoing the front timeing cover and cam covers. Just too dark. My whole engine bay needs to be lightened up.

 

overflow needs to be lower then the radiator discharge that is all. I moved mine on top of the crash bumper

I have a lot more room than you do because I don't have any FI piping in the way, but I've also been looking for a different place to mount a small overflow out of sight to clean up the engine bay.

I'm also planning to replace the coolant with Evan's waterless while I'm ripping off the stock oil cooler/warmer. Since there is no thermal expansion of evan's, and the chance of boiling is greatly reduced I've considered just capping the overflow or running the hose to somewhere below the car just in case it were to purge some coolant from the system.

Any thoughts on that?

 

I run evans npg as well.

I do not want to remove the tank. I doubt that there will be 0 expansion/contraction so a tank would be needed.

 

im fi and have a ton of tubes over the top off the radiator, (powerlab single) making the crappiest install possible for an overflow.. and about level with the core support.. its now located on the engine side of the core support, hanging from the core support.. about where the factory airbox was on the opposite side.
Ill try to get a picture but itd be awhile until i see the car again. at least a week.

 

why not just mount next to your catch can, or move your catch can as that can go anywhere.

My overflow is mounted where your catch can is.

 

catch can is going to move as well.

I will just relocate my existing can.

What did u use to paint your cam covers on the timing cover? Does it get really hot?

 

Looks like you and I have similar winter projects. Just noticed your other thread on the wire tuck. What did you use to de-pin the connectors? Originally I was going to leave the connectors on and wrap wires with self fusing silicone tape but I like what you did a lot more.

 

used a small phillips head and a small allen key. The connectors that can be de-pinned have a orange or white piece of plastic that you remove with the phillips head. Then use the the allen key to release the connector. Its actually pretty easy.

Not all connectors de-pin the same way, some cannot be depinned with normal tools.

Alternator connector depins differently, only need phillips head screwdriver.
Injector clips have a slide in white piece of plastic you slide up and out and then use the allen key to remove.
Maf sensor..no solution
Injector sub harness 8 pin connector..I wasnt able to depin

 

im back in after the fact it appears, bt i foiund a pic showing where they mounted my overflow.. im waiting til i get muine back and in hand before i start doing engine clean and dress up.. and will eventually do a wire tuck as time and mo ney were an issue w my build from the start lol.





The overflow is right behind the core support on the passenger side right where the tubo sits on the drivers side... the stainless tab they have it mounted w is on top of the core, where i will surely flip to underneath the core.
