Default 350z motor in a 2003 fx35 engine options? This one is bad

So I found a good deal on a 2003 FX35 but it needs the motor replaced. I have no problem performing this task but I want to get the most bang for my buck as to what I could buy to replace it.

I guess what my question would be what would be the best 3.5 to put in there? (350z)

to my understanding they are pretty much interchangeable from models like the 350z and g35. would I be limited to the 2003-2004 engines or would one from a 2007 with the twin throttle bodies work?

I plan to keep the FX35 wiring harness and ecu so maybe dual throttle bodies might not be an option, so if that is the case is the short block the same and could just use the intake manifold off the motor that needs to be replaced in the fx35?

I am priceing motors right now but if I could get a better deal on a 3.5 that came out of a different model "and maybe better Performance" that is what I am aiming for.

Thanks for and help on the topic.

SOHO Motorsports - $3,300 for a built short block (properly built and blueprinted) is what I paid, shipped, after core return, including core return shipping back, including OEM gasket kit for install. You'll be hard pressed to find a better deal unless you build it yourself, locally. Talk to Nik.

Kyle @ Import Parts Pro is an option too. $2,600 - that doesn't include the OEM gasket kit though, and I'm not sure about shipping/tax.

All other shops short blocks are severely overpriced. They have too much overhead I think. Z1 Motorsports stage 3 engine kit isn't a bad deal though, but in hindsight, knowing what I know now I'd go with OEM main studs, and Juke head bolts. Apparently ARP head studs can cause warping issues on aluminum blocks. If Juke head bolts are strong enough to hold down 400whp Grand Am race cars, they're good enough for me.

Alternatively, you can find a junkyard motor, and just do a straight maintenance build, re-bore (if necessary) & hone cylinder walls at a machine shop (with torque plate). Resurface heads, clean them up, replace valve seals ~$250. Don't trust most mechanic's to bore/hone the engine properly, ensure they have the correct tools; big-***, expensive industrial machines. Keep in mind a proper OEM gasket set costs ~$500 (don't get autozone bull-****), head bolts $50, etc... **** adds up no matter what. Still going to cost you probably ~$2,000 to $3,000 depending on how thrifty you are. ~$6,000 for a built motor installed, if you have good labor rates.

PS... no point in building your motor unless you have more money to burn on cams and supporting mods, or forced induction (eg turbo/superC).

Thanks for the info but what I am really looking for is using a used motor and just looking to see if I am confined to a certain year frame and what not. Just so if I come across what may look like a good deal on a motor I want to make sure it is going to run properly in the FX35 before I were to buy it

2003-2005 VQ35DE motor out of a G35/350z/FX35 will work for sure. Expect around $1,000 for a used running motor. Try to get something with less than 100k miles, 2003 models have potential piston ring issues if the engine was driven hard at high RPMs frequently (which you wont know), and could require a complete rebuild above 100k miles. Also, any 3.5 liter engine in either the Maxima's or other Nissan model's from that time-frame is likely the same motor, just double check when you find a specific motor though.

As far as labor, if you have the hook-up, you could get it installed for $600, maybe less. Typical shop will probably charge you just over $1,000 though.

Thanks that is good to know, I have found some motors ranging from $1,000 to $2,000 I'll try and stay away from the 2003. As far as labor, that will only cost me time as I have the tools.

Thanks again for the help
