I think the only thing of value would be the maps. And they would have to be translated or changed to reflect the different inputs due to measuring unit differences etc. Technosquare and others offer those maps so most people just buy it from them.

ecu Z recognizes serial# and only work with your serial#. in case you wanna upgrade your ecu, you have to take out from your car send to the place to upgrade and put back in to make car work.
there is no way to replace jdm or aftermarket ecu other than sending your ecu to upgrade as long as i know.

Your ecu is coded to your key. You cannot buy an ecu from any JDM tuner and plug it in - it will not work unless it's specifically programmed to work with your key.
More importantly, why on earth would you bother?

Look in the Australian area for the guys who tried it. They just weren't compatible. I thought maybe the JDM ecu looks for say cubic meter per minute and the US spec sensors would send cfm? I don't know.

droideka should know more considering he's had to replace 2 ECM's under warranty since last year.

thanks
"FairLady in Japan" he has Nismo ECM in his car and what I heard from him is that he has a direct swap instead of getting the standard ECM remapped though. So does that mean all the JDM don't have the key mapped to the ECU?

I thought the Nismo ECU in Japan was actually a remap of the stock ECU? I seem to recall someone posting it was done this way so it couldn't be copied, ie you have to go to a dealer and have them flash it. Didn't sound right to me as you could buy one then copy it anyway with the right tools but who knows.
So a JDM ECU could be used if the key was coded in? I bought a spare ECU so I could have it reflashed. I had Technosquare reflash it and and copy the security code from my factory one and everything works fine. My spare is US spec though. Would be interesting to see if it worked with JDM.
