Default B&M short shifter = lock out of 1st gear?

Just had my B&M short shifter installed. First experience with B&M. Feels extremely notchy and sometimes I seem to almost get locked out of 1st gear in the morning, until the tranny has warmed. I also had my tranny fluid changed (Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90) along with the B&M shifter. There is no question on workmanship (top notch install). Just concerned because my stock shifter never locked me out of 1st regardless of weather.

Is this just how the B&M shifter is?

The shifter is extremely notchy... Although I never get locked out of 1st gear unless I am exceeding something like 25 mph. But, the stock shifter did that to me as well. Also, is it really cold in your area? I live in Florida so my situation might me a little different.

I live in 'sunny' southern Cali, so the winter's here dont' get that cold. It takes me something like 4 or 5 attempts to get the shifter into 1st gear. After the tranny has warmed up a bit, everything's fine. It's just the first 4 or 5 minutes that really suck shifting with the B&M. I've been hearing that people are having a hard time to get it into 5th gear also with this short shifter.

1st gear is no problem. I had them swap in redline fluid and some redline tranny smoothing additive. But 5th gear is a complete *****. Cause you cannot push it all the way to the top left corner for 5th... It's like u haveta balance it u cant hit the edge of the plate and move up.

ok guys, i have an idea! go to this link

http://www.rogueengineering.com/Merc...Category_Code=

at the bottom of the page and click on the install instructions. try doing step #13. (no need to remove the shifter ****, or rubber boot. just lift it up, there is plenty or room!) it sounds to me that your guide plate is off! and just a "little" off will cause this! this is an "EASY!!!" fix. it will take you less than a half hour! if i remember right, all you need is a 10mm socket? once you get in there, you will see what you need to do! let me know how it goes! if im right, this will be the best mod you have done!! (my stock shifter had the same issues!)
