How to Install: JWT Pop Charger. (Noob Proof Version) w/Pics
21 Attachment(s)
Okay..so yesterday I got my JWT pop charger in mail. I wasn't doing anything in the eve, so I thought why not install the pop charger. It came with decent instruction and good pics. I usually takes pics of ANY install I do. It's about 4 am and I can't sleep. So, I thought why not make a thread. You can disconnect the negative (-) side of the battery NOW and start your installation or if you wanna listen to radio/CD as you install your pop charger, you can disconnect the neg (-) side AFTER the install.
Pop Charger Installation Attachment 422286 Tools needed: a. Philips Screwdriver. b. 10 mm wrench. c. Drill gun with a very thin drill bit. d. 1 hour of free time. Attachment 422287 Step 1: Take old filter out. Attachment 422288 Step 2: Loosen the clip that's holding the MAF wire Attachment 422289 Step 3: Un-plug MAF wire and take out the MAF wire loom from the bend Attachment 422290 Attachment 422291 Attachment 422292 Step 4: Take out the bolt that's holding the Air box. Attachment 422293 Step 5: Loosen the bolt that's holding the MAF tube. Attachment 422294 Step 6: Loosen this clip and take it out. Now you can move the air duct. Attachment 422295 Step 7: PULL the whole airbox unit out upward. Nothing else is holding the box. Also, it's easier to unplug the MAF side first, then slide upward. Attachment 422296 Tada! Attachment 422297 Attachment 422298 Step 8: Take out these 4 bolts to un-attach the MAF tube from the Air box. Attachment 422299 Step 9: Attach the MAF tube to the new air filter. Even though the filter comes pretty tight from the factory but there were instances that it was loose. So, feel free to tighten up that clamp around the cone filter a little more with a flat head screw driver. Attachment 422300 Step 10: Attach rubber guard on the heat shield. Attachment 422301 Step 11: Line up the heat shield and make a small hole on the black plastic to attach heat shield. I only used 1 screw since it's a PITA to do. Attachment 422302 Step 12: Attach the bottom screws so that the heat shield stays secure. Attachment 422303 Step 13: Attach the new filter to your car. Unbolt the top screw and add the wire loom holder and filter holder in place. Tighten the MAF tube holder WELL. Attachment 422304 Step 14: BAM! You're all done. Attachment 422305 Step 15: Unplug the (-) terminal of your bettery. Keep it unplugged for like 30 mins (this will reset the ECU). If you're not gonna drive for the day, just unplug it (negative terminal) and plug it in the next day. Attachment 422306 Here's the VID of idle + revving (up to 5K RPM) Please click on the lower right corner "watch in High Quality", if you want to watch better quality :) |
That's Bullsh!t. How come it's so easy to remove the stock air filter on a 350Z, and it's a PITA on a G35.
Oh nice write up, and great detailed pic's!!!!! Should help a few people out there. |
though the last step of the battery is optional ( i never did it and my car ran perfectly fine) nice write up. this will work with pretty much any short ram intake install as well.
|
This is a good DIY, but if you want to advocate disconnecting the battery, you might as well have them do that first so that it will have reset by the time they complete the install.

Nice write-up....wish this thread was around eons ago when I installed my JWT. I pulled the stock filter box out like a total savage!
Another thing I might add for the noobs: Tighten up that clamp around the cone filter a little more with a flat head screw driver. I'm not sure what others have experienced but sometimes it doesn't ship too tight, so it'll tend to vibrate off through the years. |

If I had a DIY to look at before install, that's wouldn't have happened. :) |
Your gains were maybe 5hp? Great write up.
|
I felt more with the JWT pop charger then the Kinetix v+ plenum.
Instead of drilling the holes in the black plastic induction piece i heated up a little nail and pushed it through like butter. Looks WAY cleaner too! |
can you clean the filter with the K&N cleaning kit?

alright so i cleaned the JWT filter after 15k miles with the K&N filter cleaning kit.
The filter came out reddish just like any K&N filter, works great and sound amazing! Saved me $60 from a brand new filter! :) |

|

You're welcome. I must apologize to all if I haven't replied to your pm on time. I barely sign on here since I no longer drive a 350Z. I traded in for a 370Z two months ago. Still if you have a question, feel free to email me montereybluez@live.com
Thank you! |

Great post thanks for the detail. Got one in the mail today and bringing the laptop with me to do it. The code still works on the site for jw pop charger. Great deal and they shipped literally within one hour of me ordering.

Followed this to a 'T'!
I installed my Popcharger this afternoon. Took just a hair under 30 minutes. I have to tell you-after I looked at the instructions that came with it, and before I found your writeup, I was thinking about not putting it in! Went smooth as could be.
The only thing I noticed was that I needed to rotate the MAF slightly counterclockwise in the attachment to the flex-tube so the plug assembly wouldn't chafe on the bodywork... I reattached the battery and went on a 30 minute freeway cruise to allow the ECM to re-learn whatever it needed to re-learn. To me, and having put less than 100 miles on the car since purchasing it, it seemed to have a little more punch off the line. The sound of the popcharger is worth $100, though. Thanks again for the tutorial! |
I have a question. I've heard if I do CAI that I need to worry about not hydrolocking (i live in utah where it snows hard and rains hard and it's not an option to just grage) is it the same with a popcharger?

Great write up, I just installed mine over the weekend and used the photos for reference. Couldn't quite get the air duct out. I have an 05, don't know if it's easier on other years, but there just isn't enough space before the bumper to remove the duct. Heat shield's pretty secure on the bottom rail though. Thanks.

Im a noob to the Z world just so i dont get bagged on for asking.. Whats the difference between pop charger and intake?? my car has an intake but no heat shield like that i could fab something up easy amd will be in a little bit.. But Just wondering is a Pop charger a cheaper version of an intake or what??
I notice my intake sounds sick when i put my foot into it.. Is that the sound everyone is talking about |
ty !!! OP this DIY just helped out a noob like me finished installing in 40mins =P
|
I'm with ejs0806.... what exactly is the difference between a pop charger and a CAI? I've been looking at putting the CAI on the car, but seeing this, I'm wondering what the difference is, and if I could still do it with the dual intakes since I have an '08 Enthusiast
|
Popcharger is a Short Ram Intake. These are short intakes where the filter resides inside the engine compartment.
A Cold Air Intake is a longer intake where the filter is moved to a place where it can get "cold" air outside of the main engine compartment. Each manufacturer's filter, fitting and tubing is different and produces a different intake sound as well as changing the exhaust tone. And yes, if you buy an intake for your 08, it should come with two sets of filters/piping for the HR engine whereas people buying for the DE/Revup would only have one set. |
having trouble removing the MAF clip from the airbox and take out that plastic thing from the air inlet snorkel. any tips?
edit: nvm... got it |
Did you guys put those JWT stickers on? or does it come shipped like that
|
bump things like this never hurt to be seen
|
could someone tell me in step 12 do you have to drill 2 holes for screws or are they there from the beginning?
|
Anyone notice the heat shield bends OP has that connects to the duct ...
Or am I just crazy??? |
Sorry for the late reply. I do not frequent this forum because I drive a 370Z.

Installed today on my 05 35th ann edition.. Easy to do, the part that took the most time was the stupid screw in the air duct.:suicide: So got a torch and nail; took the screws that came with it and tossed em :icon21: Heated nail put thru plastic; drilled bigger hole in heat shield and used nut and bolt. So much faster will cut bolt down tomorrow but here are my before and after. Thanks for the DIY !!

Anyone try the pop charger/pulley combo that conceptzperformance offers? Sounds like a no brainer..
