Default Nismo Rear Deck Spoiler Questions

Hey guys. I'm looking to start modding my car. I got bit by the mod bug. These upgrades are starting out small and will probably get bigger as I go along. My first question is over the NISMO S-Tune 350Z Coupe Rear Deck Spoiler. Here is a link to it at Courtesy Nissan. However, I'll likely buy it from Performance Nissan due to a discount. Here is the link to Performance Nissan.

Now... I'm assuming that buying the part, getting it painted, and installed will run me about $800. My problem is that I have the OEM 350Z Rear Spoiler on my car. I was told that because the Nismo one has a smaller base in which it attaches to your hatch, I would have 2 holes left over from where the OEM spoiler was.

Has anyone had this problem? How much would it cost to fill these holes and repaint them? Furthermore, has anyone else been in my situation? I figured I would live with the OEM Spoiler if it is too much of a hassle. Comments, opinions, feedback welcome.

Hey guy. Be careful with the Nismo wing. I am getting the same one on my new ride and the dealer told me that I would have to replace the strut tubes that open and hold up the hatch. The stock ones are just not strong enough to do the job because of the increased bulk of the wing. I got the new tubes thrown in to my deal so I don't know how much they may cost. Just wanted to let you know. I plan on keeping the stock ones, even those babies are not cheap.

Thanks man. I appreciate the input, looks like it will cost me more than $800.

Welcome to you both. Have fun and you will love this place, it is all you need to learn everything about your car...GOOD AND BAD!!

Faluzure,

I have seen a couple of threads that talk about this issue. I think it depends on how they mount the new one, but more than likely you will have a very small part of the old holes showing. I also think it depends which "nismo" wing you get. There are like 3 or 4 different wings (JDM,US,Replica,CC or EVO-R I don't remember which). Just do a search and you should find the answer to your question.

I think a lot of people on this forum have the Nismo wing and the stock hatch struts. I have the NISMO wing and don't have any problems with my stock stuts. You might have to perform a few modifications to your hatch, but you should not have to buy new struts. Try the "penny trick" to your springs and then remove the counter weight. That should be all you have to do. I could be wrong though, so if somebody else has an opinion....

Almost all the cars we've added these wings to don't seem to need the new hatch struts. There is a counter weight in the hatch that should be removed when installing the new wing. Also if you have the stock lip spoiler on the hatch you will have a couple holes left over to hide/fix. You might want to go with the JDM style VIS wing we sell for $285.00. Contact Tony over here if your interested.

Hey Jeff. I'm looking at your listing and I'm not sure which one you're referring to. Could you give me a direct link to your store for this wing?

Also, I don't really want to use adhesive to put this wing on. Does it support a more permanent attachment to the hatch?

I will be adding this wing to our site asap, so check back later on today for the listing in the exterior section of our site, mynismo.com
As for the problem about the hatch shocks, so long as the counter weight is removed, which is easily done during the install of the wing.

Do you have that wing available in carbon fiber?

Thanks Tony! As for the counter weight, if I were to buy this, would directions be included on how to remove it (so I can give them to the body shop for them to do).

As for the question about bolt on or adhesive, which method does this spoiler use?

Hello Tony.. I understand some of the aftermarket nismo replica wings are slightly different that the OEM Nismo wing, as you also indicated on your website.

What is exactly the difference? I remember seeing a picture comparison of both somewhere on here and the tips at each end of a replica wing actually touched the hatch and looked quote a bit different. Can you help us on that? Thanks in advance.

Counter weight is originally installed in the stock hatch. All you have to do when installing the wing is to use a socket wrench to take it out. You don't have to buy it.

Depending on the fitment of the wing, your body shop would have to drill 2- 4- or even 6 screws to hold the wing down. Adhesive is a must.

Welcome to the club!

So you would use both adhesive and screws to assemble the wing?

To Queenz350Z & Tony@Performance. If I order this kit, does it come with the bolts/screws/adhesive tape too or do I supply that myself. I'm really a noob when it comes to these things.

Yes we do have the NISMO replica wing in carbon fiber as well. The main difference between the replica wing and the NISMO wing is the flat bottom piece on the deck lid. The Replica wing is sufficient enough to cover stock holes from the factory wing. The NISMO wing is not wide enough to cover the stock holes, therefore Z owners with factory wings who want to upgrade to the NISMO is highly recommended to go with the replica. If you get the authentic NISMO wing you will probably have to shave the factory holes, R&I the back glass and have the whole hatch refinished which is obviously more costly. Simple solution: replica wing. The replica wing is very high quality and the molds were replicated from the JDM NISMO wing, unfortunately the replica wing does not come with any hardware and does take more time to measure the wing to the center of the car but any skilled bodyman should be able to do this and install using their own hardware. The authentic NISMO wing does come with a template and all needed hardware for installation. Hope this answers some of your guy's questions.

Default VIS wing

Faluzer,

i'm getting my VIS replica nismo wing I got at Performance put on as we speak. They (body shop) have the wing apart and prepped and just primered it. The wing is pretty good quality so it didn't take long for them to prep it. The wing has 4 screws on the base to screw into the hatch, so you would have to drill 4 holes. This wing will cover the oem holes and they are using 3m double sided tape too for the install. The wing feels pretty light.
I don't like the USDM nismo wing anyway and couldn't afford the JDM one, so this was a good choice. Oh yeah, the wing only comes with the screws, 6 plastic strips (no clue what they are for), and 6 small round rubber pads. You'll have to buy the 3m tape.

Sweet! Thanks for all the info Andy & islandsnow. I'll probably call the body shop tomorrow and tell them about this.

islandsnow, you said you didn't get the JDM replica? Can you link me to the one you got?

Andy, is there any real difference between the two (VIS & JDM). It seems both covers the holes left by the OEM wing.

Oh and also, what kind of 3M tape should I buy? Would Autozone have it?

Faluzure....do a search for the tape...I know that a thread was done about what type of tape to use when installing a wing...but if I recall it is 3m 4229-P tape and no I doubt autozone would have it.
