Question Gauge wiring help

I finally got a means of checking my oil temp. A Defi D series, along with an AutoMeter pod, & my thermocouple installed in my oil pan. Now I just need to run the wire through the 2 firewalls. Can anyone suggest an easy way to do this and a location to drill a hole (if needed)?

Also, is there an easily found wire to tap the gauge's light into to allow dimming with the other gauges?

i just driled threw my fire wall. make sure you seal the hole though. you dont want water leaking in.

as for the dimming. im sure there is an easier way, but i was installing my led side markers the same time i was installing my guages and i ended up tapped into the side markers for my gauge lights. they dont dim, but they only turn on when i turn on my headlights.

easiest way through the fire wall is the rubber gromit on the right side of the car, near the battery. You can either make a small incision in it and snake your wire through there, or try and pry in along side one of the existing wires going through it w/ a straightened coat hanger or other device used to run wires. Then once its through, electrical tape your wire to the end of your coat hanger and pull the other end *carefully* through the gromit and your wire is run.

If you're gonna drill through the firewall, be selective about where you are drilling because obviously you could hit something with the drill and if your wires hit something hot when they come out they could melt or ground themselves when the covering melts. And yes, use silicone or some other waterproof sealant to reseal the hole after. Personally, I would just go through the gromit though. It is harder at first, but is safer and easier in the longrun.
