Thumbs up FINALLY!!!! Custom Fiber Glass 350z Doors!!!

Ok Guys. I posted a thread a few months back promising this and finally got around to doing it. I was originally going to make some simple FG doors. I was then inspired by a local Z member to go a little further.

Man what a nightmare!!!!!!!! But they are finished and a lot of folks like them. In fact I won best interior at last weekend’s Funk Master Flex car show in OC, MD. So, let me know what you think.

If there is enough interest I might consider finding a manufacturer to make them. Drawback would be price . These things are labor intensive!!!!!!!!

I also decided to do the headliner. not as difficult. but hard to show through photos!

Very neat idea, good to see some people taking DIY to next level, I agree on the wavy, allthough it would have added weight I would have bondo'd and sanded til my little hands could sand no more to make it less wavy. I am also a fan of symetry...that was lost on this project, but quite unique.

The doors are a little....BAM!! IN YOUR FACE 350 Z!! lol

I'm not feeling the headliner, it looks a little funky, but it was dark in there :P

You car is pretty damn sweet, and you won best interior? How about some shots of your dash and interior?

And is this lighter? I dont honestly see the point, I could see the point definitely of some Carbon Fiber headliner/doors, now that would me get all itchy :P

Awesome car!!

No point in manufacturing this. There's tons of places around that can do custom FPR dashes and doors and interior works. Just look at some show cars at HIN, many of them have FPR or Carbon Fiber dashes, doors, etc.

Props for custom work and ingenuity, but it looks DISGUSTING to me. Doors, headliner...all that...

I think they look great, and think you should be proud the work you did.

Don't listen to these haters; congratulations and continue the good work.

I'm just trying to voice an honest opinion. Those doors don't look good at all. Looks so out of place...

perhaps its not wavy, but the silver paint photographs splotchy? The first hood repaint I had was splotchy.

Regardless, nice work. Not my cup of tea, but I appreciate your going for it.

Ok lets se if I can address all of this.

First off. this is a prototype. Perfection was not a goal. Seeing if I could actually do it was. But keep the responses coming both good and bad. I have been on this board for a long time and know what to expect when I put myself out there.

Ares -- some of that is lighting .... some is wavy. The headliner was not a priority but more of an afterthought. So, that one was a quicky. The doors were very difficult and show very well in person.

And they are heavy. Mainly b/c I used the stock panels. If they were true FG panels they would be about the same wieght as stock, if not lighter.

Ares/illudezion -- "I think itd be cooler; raised, padded, and stretched with a nice leather."

Maybe so but it has been done to DEATH. Tried something different! Isn't that what it is all about?

Laidbackracr -- Thanx for the words. As for the sanding. Get this the left door has about 100 hrs in it. Folks that have done glass work can tell you how much work went into this. The numbers are very difficult and I am not a pro. This is only my second glass project. So I wass pleased it came out this well. It is much easier to create a shape that represents nothing. It is harder to create a shape that is SUPPOSED to look like something.

artar350 -- The idea is that this could come both ways .... CF or FG. As I said earlier, the door panels would likely be lighter, but the headliner might be a wash. The headliner is not really that heavy to begin with.

Yes I won best interior. There were cars there that had amazing interiors and many of them won something in other cats. It was the uniqueness that did it. It simply hasn't been done. And once again, they show nicely in person. Plus, I have a little more inside my Z than just the doors

And as for wavy headliners .... honestly ... I have never seen a FG headliner that wasn't wavy.

And lastly, Its a show car man ..... everything about it is supposed to be BAM

Donald0730 -- many places make FG sub boxes as well but we see those being mass produced all over the place. not to mention there is a company the mass produces CF door panels for the Z. So, there is a market for this stuff.

Triple8Sol -- thanks

LiNks -- "haha lol your nuts, will that stuff crack if you hit a bump hard??"

Nah there really isn't a lot of bondo on any of this. That is what made it so hard. It is almost 80-90% glass. And trust me I thrashed her around for a couple of road trips and she is still good.... but ur right I am nuts though

ryanhartnett -- thx

2003z -- thx. I think u got the point. Going for it is what it was all about for me. if not I could have just purchased something on line and saved myself the hassle.

Reggi914 - no its a BMW 330si

And to the rest that are having fun .... keep it coming. Free speech is a wonderful thing.

Dude,

I can appriciate the work that went into it. I do my own Fiberglass and CF work and know the work involved. It doesnt matter what people say, it matters thatYOU like it and thats all that counts. People on this board will flame just to flame and thats the way it is, in fact the other day some kid said that "Mercedes Terell", one of the hottest import models EVER, was getting FAT... This was the proof that peoples opiniond DO NOT matter and for this reason alone is why I really do not post pictures of anything I do anymore on this board. This board tends to harbor alot of TROLLS and is a more hostile environment to post in than some other boards.Anyway I think it looks original and thats what wins car shows, remember that...
