Right to tight.
Left to loosen.

What you're supposed to do is remove the shiftboot and ring. Then hold the shifter shaft with a pair of pliers or vice grip. Then turn the **** with all your might. This way you won't damage anything with the shifter. i believe there is a bit of thread locker on the shift ****... hence why its so hard to remove.

I just twisted mine to the left. I didn't need tools at all.

if it feel really tight, make sure to use locking pliers to gain leverage. Otherwise you will damage the assembly.

ya i put a nismo shifter that my girlfriend got me for christmas in my z.

pretty easy.

flat blade screw driver and pop up the console surround the shifter. use a piece of radiator hose or some other thick rubber substance to protect the shaft from being damaged.

clamp one wrench on the shaft, and use either your hand (if you are strong enough) or put a protective rag over the **** itself and use a wrench to twist off.

clean the threads with a wirebrush and mild soapy water before you put the new one on.

the trick is to MAKE SURE that the shaft is not allowed to rotate while you are removing the old ***, OR installing the new one. make sure you keep a hand on the wrench and make sure it stays stationary, otherwise the tranny will be damaged.

you won't ruin anything as long as you lock the shaft in place as you twist off the shift ****.

Lift up the center console by gripping right under the aluminum ring that surrounds the shifter assembly and pulling firmly upwards. The center console pops right up. Be careful as the air conditioning controls attach from the rear via a white cable.

You will see a white fluffy thing under the fake leather dust boot. Under the white fluffy thing, there is a thick black rubber shift boot. Use a pair of vice grips to grip the rubber boot, and lock the shaft in place by holding the vice grip firmly as you twist off the shift ****. You may need a wrench to loosen the shift ****, as the factory sometimes uses loctite to secure it.

This was my first mod, I did it without any help and didn't ruin anything.
Just be careful and don't force anything.
