Default Foam Engine Bay Insulators - what for?

Can anyone tell me what these are for? Clearly, they are an after-thought because they don't fit very well and if the designers really wanted to block off that portion from the beginning, they would have simply pulled the rubber liner from above the firewall all the way to the edge. Every time I wash my car, I wipe the motor down and when I get to these, I have to be really careful because they peel off pretty easily. I've been meaning to ask this question for a while now. Finally getting around to it. They are highligted in yellow in the photos.
Why would Nissan think it to be undesirable to not completely block off the engine bay? Wouldn't that simply kick out heat? which is a good thing.

1) keep rain from running down into the engine bay

2) keep hot air from escaping

3) keep the hood from vibrating against plastic parts

^ #3 sounds like a very good explanation. I wonder how much crush is actually happening when the hood is closed.
