i talked to my body shop guy...and he's wanting to charge me $500 to paint my dash! he says its a HUGE job and nearly impossible to ensure the paint will stick. WTF? can anyone tell me exactly what kind of primer basecoat i would need so i can do this project myself? after i get the dimples filled and sanded i can take it to a shop and have them lay the silver on.
want it to look like this...but in chrome silver

any advice will be helpful. i have my dash ripped apart because he was supposed to start on it today!

i personally like the honeycomb look, but if you want it gone....you need adhesion promoter from dupont.....thats what WILL make it stick....then any kind of primer, seler, and then you color code for base and any clear you want
i just did my center part and the actual center console and the paint holds up great

no need really.....the texture isnt bad on the center pieces....its worse on the console.....youll definately need to prime the console but the center piece i almost buried the honeycomb texture without primer....but if you want it smooth....prime it

ok thanks. yea i wont be doing my center console...only down to the shifter like in the picture. ALSO...what could i use to "mold" the little trim piece for my double din unit? to fill in the gaps before paint so it looks like one piece

LOL, that's my dash in the picture
It was done professionally here by a bodyshop I know
There really is a lot of work to do to make sure it sticks and looks good.
If you're interested in getting it done, PM me

i would do black to go along with the theme of ur steering wheel/seats....
I had mines done in the same silver alloy thats in the plastic peices inside the car. Paint Matched with no clear coat so it looks OEM. No dimples and it cost me 150 to get done. All jokes aside it should have came from the factory like this, I love it. Get tons of compliments.
I however never have experienced any glare whats so ever. Perhaps its because yours is clear coated?! Not sure. But mines is a flat finish like the rest of the silver plastics in the car. Here is a pic.

I'm pic whoring. Notice no glare in window.

I know the question is old, but if you're going to do this yourself do it right. Block the piece with 180. Spray some adhesion promoter and a nice coat of urethane primer and let it cure. Sand it with 600 and clean it with a good pre-paint prep degreaser. Base. Clear.
