maybe your little rubber thingys that attach to the hatch are worn out? sorry dont know what they are called, but they seem to put pressure on the hatch in order for it to "pop"

Try this;

Twist off those rubber thingys and then unscrew them. They come apart. Stick 2-3 pennies inside of it on each of them and put them back together.

It should work better then.

Well if the 2009 has the retractable hard top it might come close. That would be sweet.
