Hi folks -

Does Nissan do anything different when they paint their cars in special edition colors that they charge extra for? My '08 came with Nogaro Red paint, which according to the invoice was an extra $500 (the dealership waived this since I wasn't particularly interested in red and they REALLY wanted to get the car off their lot).

What's with the extra charge? Are you paying for the relative rarity of the color or is there a special painting process involved that justifies the additional expense?

It doesn't have anything to do with "rarity" of the color, it involves a special paint/process. The 2004 Liquid Aluminium was $1000 extra and from what I've heard people say - it's virtually impossible to get somebody to match it when trying to get aftermarket parts painted.

If you'll notice, all the special edition colors, especially the extra cost ones, are unusual colors, special finishes, multi-layer, etc. Although, I have to admit I'm surprised Nogaro Red was extra cost.

 

Thanks Dave, that sheds a lot of light on why the Nissan touch-up kit I got involves a 2-part painting process. My wife's Gotham Gray Rogue uses a normal enamel touch-up bottle. Mine has a color and clear coat, and it's a pain to apply.

 

I have the same problem with ultra yellow. It's almost impossible to get it to match.

 

i believe the nagaro red is a three stage paint. I'll make sure next time i'm down at the paint shop.

With most pearl colors, you will need to blend if you are just painting a single or couple of panels. Don't expect anything pearl to match.

Hardest colors to match are blue, yellow and white, hope that helps.

 

That's good info. I'm wondering if the difficulty with color matching in these multi-stage paint applications explains why my car's A-pillars, roof and hood are a slightly different shade of red than the rest of the body panels. At first, I thought it might have had something to do with painting aluminum vs. steel, but seeing as how only the hood is aluminum, it looks more like a color matching issue.
