Shift knob help!!!! Girlfriend of 350z owner
Take a look at this link on shifting technique:
http://www.shortshifter.com/techniques2.htm
It's 10 years old, but shows important point: people use shifters in more than one way. Some may use this 'wing chun' sticky hand wrist palm wrap mode, and / or simple palm on top mode, and / or a 'tennis grip' mode. So the question then becomes, what's the best functional shape for the ****?
The tube shapes would best allow this varied use of hand movements. But some might like a more restful palm technique, this would require a more rounded top. Sometime fingers are used which requires a ball shape.
The default stock **** is a hybrid ball and tube. From behind it's straight, it's tall enough (9.5 cm/ 3.75'') to allow fingers to wrap around 'neck', and ball portion protruding to the front, is wide enough for most to get fingers on it from above (5.2 cm/ 2''.)
Now, look at this comparison pic link:
http://www.g35driver.com/forums/inte...aira-****.html
Notice differences in height etc. But if you consider which mode of usage(s) you'd prefer to combine, you might more easily decide on what type of **** to get.
The Kaira mushroom is ideal for palm down technique, but is a bit short for 'tennis grip' or using back of hand as in short shift link. That link was for 5 sp. also, and when you factor 1-3-5-6 and 2-4-6 shift patterns and just moving inside the 6 speed design in general, there can be more options.
The more complex the ****, the more varied the motions can be; if the **** is more specific in terms of shape, like a short neckless ball or pure tube, the options are reduced. For general driving, you might want more options, for specific driving purposes, such as track, rally, you might want to switch to a more 'primitive', simpler shape.
So, for commuter driving, with some occasional twisty mashing, one might want something more like the default. I like the Sparco Tecno in this regard; it's a tube based **** with slight top rounding for a bit of comfort for palm.
Same idea for Moma Cobra, which is very nice in aluminum & leather.
However, there are 2 more issues.
- One wants a screw type, (10 x 1.25 mm) and 'universal' ***** use other attachments.
- Also, there is weight; a 1 pound Kaira may be nicer for shifting. What one might do is decide first on function type, then if nothing available for screw sizing, or it's too light, then get it made.
I contacted latheworks {re: T Kaira repro} and was informed of the following:
"Price will be $125 for the ****, and $30 extra for a burnt coloring in
stainless steel. It will be $115 in aluminum (no coloring available).
It will be $115 in Copolymer plastic with a brass thread insert in
black, blue, red, white, or gray color."
So if you wanted a T Kaira, you could get it in heavier steel, lighter aluminum, or lightest plastic. Or you might modify the mushroom and make it same height as stock **** to allow for palm rotation.
Same for any shape. Might not be as refined, for ex., TK's logo won't be reproduced, but you might get a 'Z' in there. I haven't decided yet what I would do about it, but I thought I'd mention it, FYI.

Oh oh oh!!! Let me get in on this thread!!!!1111

Okay, but seriously - my g/f went through this same thing for me at Christmas. She couldn't choose between (paying half of) the Tommy Kaira **** or Forged Performance. She ended up getting mad because she didn't know what I would like better so she just told me and I bought a Forged Performance **** (that she paid for).
For the record - I've had a Black Nismo **** and it sucks. Looks nice but the lack of any weight makes it suck. Forged Performance is by far the best I've ever used (and I've had quite alot of different ***** on all of my cars). I would imagine the only thing that would beat out a Forged Performance **** would be the Tommy Kaira **** - but I'm not baller like that.

I replied (too much) to this thread about 2 months ago, but decided to upgrade what we keep our hand on most of the time, after all, so after searching online I got it down to a TWM or go custom; couldn't really decide between two TWM models .. ;p .. so contacted Chris @ latheverks.com,
sending drawing of profile I wanted, metrics and specs, options and all that stuff.
Pic shows basic context, I think of it as an extended T Kaira design; I thought 2.5'' a bit too short, horizontal palm limited, & preferred to add a vertical palm option with 3'', still shorter than the stock 3.625''.
( One could always get a shorter shift 'rod', up to 40% shorter. )
Material is stainless steel, weight 0.650 Kilo /1.43 LB.
( SS is 3x heavier than Aluminum, Titanium is 1.78x heavier than Aluminum. )
Has a bronze tint/burn, and 3 grooves to spec. Pic an early image w/out
bead blast 'satin finish' from bottom to lower groove. Not sure if I'll keep it or have it sanded off. Arrives tomorrow .. ;p .. Maybe more pics later ..
