Xenon Bulb Problem
i just bought my first Z from the states and imported it to Canada. I had to install daytime running lights but the module i bought didnt work. Also the passenger headlight bulb doesnt light up now. I thought i maybe shorted it out, but i checked all the fuses by the battery and all looked good. i may have bumped the bulb or touched it without thinking. Any ideas? i dont want to buy a 200$ bulb just to put it in and not work. Thanks
Uninstall the module and see if it works again.
Xenon bulbs use two electrodes where electricity arcs across as opposed to a filament in a halogen, so bumping it would have no effect. Sounds like there could be a short or your not getting enough power to both headlamps. You can try swapping bulbs/ballasts to narrow down if uninstalling the kit doesn't do anything but you'll have to remove the headlamps. Have fun taking the bumper off...

If you need help removing the bumper and testing the lights and are in Toronto or GTA, ill help u out no problem. Ive done it a few times already and is really easy.
Okay i disconnected the module and the passenger HID light still wont work. Im going to try to replace it with a Cheap H7 bulb to see if the bulb is a problem. Will a H7 plug into the socket properly?

Double check fuses, try new ones... i've had some that looked fine but were dead.
H7 is a halogen bulb, D2S and D2R is a HID xenon bulb. That guy doesn't know what he's talking about or he is thinking of aftermarket kits to to install xenon bulbs in a halogen housing.
Try swapping bulbs left/right and see if the good one works on the other side. If the good one doesn't work on the other side you probably have a dead ballast. That is the electronic box that controls the xenon bulbs.

thanks for all the info, i didnt know there was a fuse box under the battery so ill check that first. I picked up a D2R xenon bulb that i might try if nothing else works. Im taking it all apart tonight so ill let you know tommorow if i wasnt able to fix it.

okay i made some progress, the reason the bulb is not working is because the wire is shorting out. the fuse blows everytime i turn the lights on. Does anyone know where the wires for the bulb goes once it leaves the headlight assembly? i cant seem to find them.
No sorry this is beyond my limited knowledge. You might check the field service manual (FSM) for your year and make of car. I looked in mine but I didn't see any specifics on the wiring. Wish I could help here...
My only suggestion is take the bulb out check the wiring around the plug where it plugs onto the bulb. I was getting a short in this area too for some reason but moving the wires around helped.
But it seems reasonable this problem occurred directly from something you did trying to install the DTRL kit... i'd really inspect this area and make sure everything is good there.
Good luck man...

i think i found the problem. took the bumper off and removed the light assembly. All the wires passed a continuity test so i turned the lights on, and started pluging in the bulbs to try to fing the short. when i pluged in the ballast the fuse blew. I am going to replace it, and the bulb should work. anyone know where to get a cheap oem ballast
Glad you found the problem... you try swapping bulbs and/or ballasts just to make absolutely sure? Process of elimination is your best friend.
As for where to buy a new ballast... ebay or salvage yard? Dealership and even online OEM parts retailers are a bit overpriced, they want $300+ just for one side.

Or this salvage yard national chain:

I'd really do some checking on your DTRL kit, that may be causing problems. It's very rare for these ballasts to go out on their own. I still think you may have a short or some other electrical issue caused by your mod or something you messed up which your fuse is protecting. I've had water in my right side ballast and it shut itself off to prevent a short, once I drained all the water out and let it dry it powers on fine now. Is what i'm getting at is the ballasts are pretty resilient, you better be sure its really dead before you buy a new one.

Well I doubt it is coincidental the ballast starts having problems around the same time you installed the DRL kit. Did you have to splice or tap into any wiring to install it? I'd check those areas for shorts. It would be a shame to kill a new ballast...
