Rust on fender, can this be easily repaired?

Default Rust on fender, can this be easily repaired?

Hey guys,

I have noticed some rust doing its worst on the inner side of my rear quarter panel for some time now (see pic below). I think it's slowly getting worse. Can this be easily repaired by a body shop? What can I expect for cost here? Thanks in advance.

Cheaper to just replace it in my opinion. Body work is expensive. Thy would have to sand it down, bondo it, resand, then repaint it. Just get a replacement fender and have it painted and installed.

Was there body work done there previously? I have never seen rust on a 350z before.

Except that's a rear fender and it would cost more to cut it out, prep it, weld a new one in and replace it than it would to just sand it, bondo it, sand it, seal it, primer, and paint.

Nope, at least not that I know of. I am not the first owner of the car so it's a not a 100% guarantee. I haven't seen any evidence of any such work on the car and aside from this little spot, the rest of the body is in very good shape.

Interestingly enough, when you look at the inner fender closely in the pic, towards the bottom, you can see that it is not entirely smooth. It looks like it has dimples, as if it has been struck with something along the inner line or someone tried to bend it in, although that looks too uniform to just be an accidental thing. Does your fender have this?

+1. Replacing body parts is not cheaper than simple body work. Rear fender is probably at least $300 just for the part alone. That is 5 hours of labor time from a body shop that charges $60/hour, which is a reasonable estimate. I would imagine a skilled body work person would clean this up in a couple of hours. Replacement seems like a much costlier option than having it repaired.

I don't have that kind of problem here in the desert anymore thank god.

Serious corrosion UNDER the paint. Anything less than professional repair is just cover up – it will not last.

Agree with davidv. That does not look good at all, if this was a 40 year old vehicle I'd say it goes with the territory; but for a late model Z that is terrible.

It definitely needs to go to a professional who should be able to cut out the bad metal and replace it, THEN prime and paint over it. Anything less will not fix the issue in the long run IMO.

Agreed. I called my auto body guy and scheduled an appointment for tomorrow AM. He'll take a look at let me know what he can do. I'll post an update tomorrow AM.

Get the fenders rolled while your at it, once its fixed you won't be able to roll the fender without repair work.

I was thinking about doing that. My right side rubs a tiny bit when I take a hard corner. As you said, this is a good opportunity to roll the fender.

Do you know the quarter panel is $800 alone not to mention the hours upon hours of labor to remove it and replace it. Your already down a couple thousand even before paint and prep comes into the picture

I dont think that has anything to do with the north east I live in NY and have never seen a Z rust like that actually it is a little premature for the z33 being a younger bodtsyle but its not prone to rust

Did you not read my 2nd post? I didn't eye **** the picture hard enough to realize he was talking about the rear quarter panel. I read "fender". "fenders" are in the front of the car. Therefore I didn't realize he was speaking of the rear.
