I think you guys will discover that if the shiny gray layer isn't completely removed, down to the base black plastic, any paint finish you apply will be less than permanent. Whatever it is, that layer is as slippery as Teflon, and even with an adhesion-promoter applied before paint, it's still too slick. Once you're down to bare plastic, though, Krylon's Fusion for Plastic paint seems t do the trick. They make a satin black (#2421) which looks very close to the original finish, at least in color.

question: instead if painting them can you vinyl wrap them instead?
Either 3m 1080-S12 Satin black or 3m 1080-M12 Matte Black

my guess it should hold up alot better.

By the way, you dont have to break anything or pull off the padded part.

Those plastic covers simply pop off. Same with the aluminum strip on the passenger door grab. Pops right out. Everything else on the door stays intact.

As with a lot of 06 owners, my handles scratched pretty easy. After searching everywhere and doing a ton of research, I tackled this problem this weekend. Here are the results. I even did the trim ring around the shifter to tie the 2 doors together. My camera phone isn't the best but, it's a great match. It's a shade between the outside and the seats.

I had a gift card at Lowes so the whole thing cost $3.05. The removal was very easy and I sanded them down to bare plastic before painting.

Thanks for all of the posts about this issue. It was a big help.

^Looks good, did you use the same Duplicolor paint type as the OP and if so, what paint code?

Thank you! I used a Valspar 85202 "Fonda Copper". My girl works at the paint department at Lowes and she helped. It sticks really well but I sanded down to the plastic. There are like 3 coats of different crummy layers of stuff to get through.
