There are a lot of really good threads on my350z.com that show how to prepare and paint interior plastic trim that has been scratched. I read several of them and was getting ready to paint my interior drivers door handle (officially: power window main switch finisher) when I stumbled upon a really inexpensive ($20) used door handle on ebay. I purchased it, thinking I would practice on it before attempting my original piece.

Every single thread I read about refinishing the trim said I needed to strip the rubbery plastic black paint and take the trim down to the grey plastic. When I began to strip the paint from my ebay handle it quickly became obvious it is black plastic through and through. There is no paint to remove. The parts numbers suggest it is an OEM handle and the seller said it was removed from his totaled Z.

I have two 2004 Zs - a roadster and a coupe - and although neither of them have more than 21,000 miles they both have a few scratches on the interior door handles that suggest both of my cars have grey plastic under the paint, just like all the threads suggest.

Can anyone help me figure out what I purchased on ebay?

 

I found a pair of those in a scrap yard several years ago, but don't know what year the wreck was, only that it was a DE car. Too bad they didn't fit my '08.
