I think it might have been... it occured right after some server changes, just happened to get this huge surge

This site can be very random. usually after site changes there is a surge in users, then it dies down. Then after the next server change it surges again. That's the cycle.

 

Or spyders crawling the site desperatly seeking to steal bandwidth.
