Default My engine damage pics. 4 down, 2 to go..

One snapped rod, and three pistons broke off at the wrist pin. I've never seen anything like it. But this is my first turbo aluminum motor. Bleh.

The pics are huge, if your afraid of big pictures don't click em. These are pics from the bottom of the motor, I have not pulled the heads yet.

Here you see the rod snapped at the top, Perhaps the first thing to set off this nasty chain of events.

Here is a shot of one of the pistons, you see the piston broke off at the wrist pin. What the hell, thanks for the craptacular pistons nissan.

Sweet. I have no idea what went wrong, I've never seen a motor go out like this. The internals are offically CRAP. So, Anyone have a stock short block? Mabye the guys who did a rebuild know where I can find one for cheap or have one around. I would like to get my Z back on the road before the end of the summer. I only drove it for 3 days before it died.

There have been some built long blocks for sale on here recently, I'd look around, you might get back in the game sooner than you think.

OMG, that is the worst damage I have seen on the VQ to date. The lower pan looks like a grenade went off in there.

Didnt this happen while you were cruising around, and not under boost?

He is running the Greddy kit, and IIRC, it was the first time he had driven the car for about 3-4 months. It was not driven during the winter.

If I remember correctly, his engine blew while he was decelerating after simply maintaining a cruising speed? This didn't happen during a wide open run, which is sorta scaring the **** out of me.

As an aside, I know he did not have the TS reflash. Is anyone aware of any blown Z's that did have the TS reflash.

Should be very interesting to see the tops of the pistons when you get the heads off.

As am I. I'll most likely have the heads off tomarrow so I'll post pics.

Why would I take it to the dealer and get another vq with crap stock internals?

I'd rather not buy a pre-assembled long block. I'm very particular about my motors. I'd consider getting one from SGP, but they are over priced.

It happened off throttle, I hadn't boosted it since last year. I was pulling about 4 deg of timing at 5.5 psi, fuel was on point as I was running my own fuel enrichment map on the emanage using map x rpm cause I'm a speed density guy. It was fine. And I've tuned full standalones from scratch for 30+ psi so I know what i'm doing. I just wish I could isolate the turd that started this whole thing, but the damage is so bad I don't believe ill really walk away from this with anything more than a blown up vq. It's gonna make a nice coffee table stand, that's for sure.

Todd, thanks for the info. I'll shoot ya a PM right now.

holy ****...

sometimes you gotta wonder how strange it is that everything just lets go at the same time.

i have a friend that had a s2000 that was just I/H/E and the same exact thing happened to him. sometimes this **** just happens.

sorry to hear about your misfortune. i have a spare short block but I havent decided yet if i want to sell it or start building it as a spare for my car.

Todd, thanks for the info. I'll shoot ya a PM right now.

for one, you'd have a brand new platform to pull apart/overbore and throw forged internals back in, you'll have to get a new block reguardless, right? probably wouldn't work, and you'd have to re-assembly the motor to stock conditions...PITA
