Default Transmission Upgrades

Assuming that my worst fear comes true and I do have a bad synchro. Are there any transmission upgrades I can get to handle the additional power and what are they?

I may be wrong but as far as I have heard, synchros are not affected by power, just the main gears.

sorry, what I meant is if indeed I have to get my synchros replaced, and since I have TT I doubt that this would be covered by warranty, I might as well get a stronger tranny and so was wondering what's out there and who's done what.

You could upgrade the tranny to Version9, which means a new transmission. Another option is to have your tranny modified with straight cut gears. The benefit is a VERY strong transmission that you can shift at WOT without the clutch. The downside is you better get really really good at heal and toe shifting, becuase without sychros, you cant down shift without rev matching.

I actually got a new transmission do to a bad syncro. The stealership was aware of the fact that I had a turbo. Like 002-M-P said, syncros dont wear or get ruined do to the amount of power you are putting out.

Guess I'll keep that extended warranty after all!

that's good to know. I still hope that changing the tranny oil to syntetic will help and I just started a bad habbit.

Sharif, what's a version 9 transmission and how much would that cost?

The version 9 tranny is from the 2005 350Z. It has much improved synchros. Cost is about $1900, but I could double check for you. List is $2200.

well, I have an 05 so I'm assuming I already got the version 9 tranny then.
That makes me think even more that it's not a synchro issue.

I think you are a driving animal...LOL...and you broke the new tranny too. The 05 isnt indestructable..just better than the old ones.

But check your tranny number...to see which one you actually have.

so tomcat - are you getting a grind going into 2nd gear a lot? I get that running 1/4 miles sometimes, not sure if that's me or the car...

Sharif = EVIL

actually I'm not getting a grind at all. Daily driving is perfect.
Just lately when I'm at the drag Strip it simply won't go into second, no grind it feels like I'm hitting a gate.
My first step is changing the tranny oil to AMSoil synthetic, I read that should help.

I'm still hoping that I picked up a bad habit of letting the clutch out before being done shifting and so it can't get in...

I have a 2003 Z and my syncros are gone also. It is costing me 3700 dollars to get it rebuild will the 2005 syncros and bearings. This better work. The shop gave me a 12,000 mile warranty with no questions asked if the syncros go out. I have had my car for 3 years and have accumalated only 10,000 miles. So in theory, the new tranny should last me about 4 years. I hope it works out for you and it doesn't cost you this much money to fix it. To all who have a Z, take it to the dealership before the warranty is over and get a new tranny.

Are you aware, that a brand new factory fresh 2005 Verison9 Tranny is only $2000...maybe a little bit less? I can have them within 3 days.

Gear detailing, cryo treating, and re shot peening of the gears will decrease the likelyhood of breaking a gear. A dog box would probably run you in the neighborhood of $6000 heh, probably not what you had in mind, not to mention you don't want a dog box in a street car.

A company like PAR might have aftermarket sychromesh gearsets for the Z, they have them for the SR20. A 1-5 synchromesh PAR gearset runs about $4500 US for an SR20 though...

It really depends on how you drive the car. Nobody really knows for sure, but the tranny can hold at least 600-700whp, but it also depends on how you drive the car. In terms of longevity, that is also a big unknown.

Very soon....new clutch and tranny are ready for a beating. I would like to install the 650cc injectors and retune, prior to heading out there...maybe with 700whp???
