Dynos cost from $30,000 to $150,000 not counting maintanace, electric, and an operator. You think $250 per hour to tune is highway robbery then you really should not be in the F/I game.Thats about average for tuning by an experienced tuner...

Well Look at their previous sc Z setup's and their numbers... if they put out the best numbers than they are probably worth the price. If not start price matching and they will come down. Always works for me!
Also in Cali its pretty expensive.. over here in Michigan the best tuners rate is $150.00 per hour and usually takes about an hour. Best advice shop around and look for the best and most cost effective.

I thought the HKS S-Con that comes with the HKS SC kit couldn't be tuned?

Matt, It is usually the shop that installed the kit, that is supposed to tune it. (should have came to us the first time) LOL. Tuning is everything, it might be worth the extra cost to get it done the right way............

$100-150/hr is what I would expect to pay. My local shop charges about 125/hr

Here's GRD's dyno rates for reference

I guess the question is are we sure the S-Con can be tuned. I was under the impression it could not...If so it may be like the UniChip where only certain places can tune it. Like SGP, SVS, XS Engineering etc...Only they can tune the F Con... HKS is VERY strict about who they consider Pro Dealers...

I paid $100/hour for dyno time, and an extra $60/hour for tuning on top of the $100. So it was $160/hour. Its money well spent as long as they do a good job, and they know what they are doing. You dont want to spend all this money, and cheap out on one of the most important steps.

Don't cheap out, but don't overpay either.

Well it is all relative because it is not something off the shelf that is easy to put a price or value on. You have to take into account the quality of the tune as you may end up spending twice as much by having to go somewhere else for another tune. Also get an idea of how long the will take to tune as it wouldn't help much if you get someone that charges 100 an hour but takes/charges you for three while the 250 an hour guy takes/charges for 1 hour, so look into it a little more the 250 an hour might be a bargain if all variables are right.

The F-Con S can not be tuned. (for the 350Z at least)

The price seems a little high, but SP Engineering supposedly does good work, it's up to you for paying slightly more.

The average seems to be around $100-$200/hour.

i posted this in my hks sc install thread, but mr john kuryama, head designer at hks, told my vendor on friday that the fcon-s CAN be tuned by an hks pro dealer. my vendor is a pro dealer, but he didn't even know this. mr kuryama said sp knows how to do it.
thanx, westpac, for your input. it makes sense to find out the total time required first.
will at sp quoted me the $250/hr rate today. he said i could add whatever other breathing mods i wanted, and they could tune my hks kit. he also said hks does not have a pulley upgrade for sale at this time. i think i'm going to wait til i get bored with what i have, and then i'll start upgrading things.
thanx for your input guys.

Not really.

SP is well-known for pricy labor for superb jobs. I got quoted the same to tune my Tnetics with E-manage + E-o1...and Im going for it. Just make sure you have most of the mods installed prior to the tune, or you are just going to waste your money and time.

Good luck!

anywhere from $75-$150 an hour here. or $85 an hour to rent the dyno. $250 an hour sounds way to much to me, even if they are supposed to be the best, i highly doubt they are worth double another good shops rate. up to you i guess.

Matt, a friend of mine, NINJA-Z has the HKS SC and is wanting more power as well. He called HKS one day and talked at length to someone at HKS and they told him to take it to AAM and they can tune the fcon-s. So I just wanted to validate the fact that the fcon-s can be tuned despite what others are saying/thinking. I dont know what it costs for this, but CP Racing charged $350 total for tuning my Vortech and I got a total of 18 runs! Granted, I know this is like comparing apples to oranges, but maybe it will help! Good luck!

$150 is good for an hour. A standalone will cost more.

SP Engineering is a premier, and dare I say work famous. Their rates reflect that, and they base their prices on supply and demand. I imagine they have a backlog of people wanted their EM's tuned by these guys.

We charge $600 for an EU tune, and $350 for a Vortech or eManage Blue tune. Takes about 6 hours start to finish, including about 50 miles of street tuning and testing. We prefer to quote flat rates, rather than hourly...sometimes it takes longer...sometimes less, but at least the customer knows they are getting a top notch tune, regardless of how long it takes.
