Turbo questions from someone who doesn`t know turbos
I`m hoping to get some opinions on the details of purchasing and owning a turbo kit for the Z. I`ve done some researching, and asked some questions/recevied some input, but I`m not satisfied yet - probably b/c $6k or more is a big deal to me.
Scenario: 03` Z 6sp with UR flywheel and some weight taken out. Driven 4k to 6k per year in Wi (25F to 95F). No snow driving of course! Driven on weekends/for fun. No track. 93 octane all the time (no ethanol crap).
If you could chime in on one or more of the items below I`d appreciate it.
The goal for the car would be the following: (highest priorities on top)
A. Safe to drive day in - day out, for the long term. No blown motors, leaks, hesitation, adding/replacing parts on a monthly basis.
B. 350-380 whp and torque with no other mods. (Turbonetics out fo the box numbers sound good. No plans to upgrade power in the future.
Questions:
1. What does Emanage/E. Ultimate do? Would having one help with seasonal changes, or would a TS relfash be enough? These machines do timing and air/fuel, right? How do you use it? Would I be able to adjust it easily, or is it more demanding for the novice user/shop only? Would I need a laptop? etc. What about the difference (besides about $275) between the two Emanages I see advertised? Is it worth the cost difference to go EU?
2. Would 380 cc injectors be enough for long term reliability/safety with the stock TN? At stock power levels with the TN would injector longevity increase significantly if I went to a larger injector? What size fuel pump would you want?
3. What about boost controllers? Price? More of a need or a bonus on a `basic` turbo install?
4. Fuel return systems? Necessary at 360ish hp? Cost?
5. Are a wideband EGT, fuel pressure, and boost gauge the only must-have`s for monitoring the car?
6. Engine building (say just rods - I don`t hear much about melted pistons). What would it cost to put in some decent rods/wrist pins
on the car? Would this be overkill for a 360whp setup?
Thanks for any and all help!
Jack
