Yesterday the 350z Club of Florida had a group dyno day over at Z Fever here in Tampa, FL. I went into the event interested to see how my car performed with a few changes since the last dyno, and in more adequate ambient conditions. The dyno was a twin roller Dynojet.

The weather was PERFECT yesterday (60-65 degrees, low humidity). I was the first on the dyno in the morning, and the car had been sitting with the hood open to cool for about an hour. I had a fuel mix of 3/4 100 octane fuel, and 1/4 93 oct. The max run topped out at 9.1 psi with the Blitz SBC on auto at 9psi and 80 gain. All runs were in 5th gear. The last two pulls the intercooler was sprayed with water just before the run. I wanted to see how far we could take it with the stock setup and the fuel.

So, the results : 412 whp, 431 tq.

Needless to say, I am VERY impressed with the results!

Below is the dyno sheet for the three runs. Notice the hump on the green one, that was caused by some wheel spin on the dyno on cold tires, it was the first run. Apologies for the low res on the graph. I'm going to go back monday to get the RTF file so I can output some quality graphs.

I hope this shows what this kit is capable of with the reflash. One thing I notice is that when anyone has issues with the kit, the first thing they turn to blame is the reflash. However, I can assure you 95% of the time this is caused by a quirk in the installation or some kind of problem with the car (MAF, TB, etc). Every time I've run on the dyno, people are *amazed* at the flat AFR curves I get with the reflash. I'm completely sold on the reflash concept. In the future I will eventually go with some sort of ems, but am completely happy with this setup for the time being.


As some might know, I had the ST kit installed early last May. My last dyno runs were in July, in 95+ degree temps, HEAVY humidity, and on a car that had just been flogged pretty heavily on the street. The car put down 367whp at that point, and while I was a bit disappointed with the numbers, I knew the conditions were far from satisfactory. For that reason I didn't really advertise my results. Since then we have added the plenum spacer and a boost controller. It's great to finally see what this car is really capable of.

So now when you lower your boost to the stock kits 8 psi where the boost should be running you will be running really rich. The boost, and the exhaust leaned out yout mixture to where it should be. If you left everything stock then the car would be runnung 9 and 10 AFR. So how good is the stock TN reflash?

whoa, hold on there, since when? a reflash doesn't hold a specific tune like an SAFC does where it has to be retuned for each change in boost setting.

a reflash utilizes the MAF and O2 sensors to maintain the afr it is tuned for, and in the reflash TN uses, it's to be optimal at 12:1...........

 

Wrong. The ECU/MAF/o2 sensors are designed to adjust the fuel mixture on the fly.

Exhaust doesn't make you run lean either. An aftermarket, more free flowing, exhaust with less back pressure will cause you to build more boost off the same wastegate configuration. The ECU adjusts the fuel mixture to compensate for the change in airflow.

The plenum spacer doesn't cause you to run lean. It distributes the flow of air to each cylinder bank and solves the issue of starvation to the front two cylinders. The ECU, by design, adjusts the fuel mixture to compensate.

Besides, this kit usually runs closer to 8.5 psi on a stock exhaust. .5 PSI is not enough to put me into 9s and 10s, AFR wise...

Now, I'm not saying the reflash is a super end-all of engine management, but it provides a level of flexability that is perfect for this application. As long as your'e within a certain threshold, it should adjust AFR/timing to keep the car running within safe limits.

I can dial in my boost to 7psi and still be in the 11's. If you'd like to send me to cash for a few more dyno runs, I'll be glad to post the results.

I am sure that the 100 octane had a lot to do with it. I know several people have made good numbers with 100 octane in the tank but most of them fail to mention it.

I'd be surprised if it made THAT big of a difference. Even on 93 octane I should be in the area of 400whp. I'd like to test the difference, too bad I won't get a chance to dyno again in cool weather for a while. If it helps any, there is no noticable difference on the butt dyno between the 93 and 100 octane. There's a gas station right near my house that sells 100oct. Any time I plan on going fast or hitting the track, you can bet my car will be running it.

Besides, as you know, my biggest problem is traction. I get none of it. I don't even seeing the point in having any more whp than present on street tires. My rear end wants to swing out to the right any time I get on the gas. I'm going to be hitting the 1/4mi next week. I'll be happy to get into the 12's on these tires.

I guess the main point is that my car can be in the 400whp club WITHOUT spending $3000+ on ems/injectors/fuel system/tune.

thats a big number on a stock kit homie. do you guys have a dyna pack down there. i'm just curious what numbers you would put out on one of those. i guess i'm more curious as to the diff between the two dynos.

 

dynojets only here in the bay area. hell, I don't even think there's a dynapack in FL!
