Default superchargers or larger injectors having a hard time starting?

seems that I've read about a few people who upgraded their injectors having a harder time starting the car. Does this seem to be caused by the larger injectors or the supercharger or both?

I'm running 440 injectors right now (in process of going to 550's as we speak) and the car sometimes starts up fine, and other times just won't crank over until the 3rd time. Initially I thought it was my battery, but I now have an optima red top with a buttload of cranking amps - like 800 CCA and it doesn't do much better.

Anyone solve the issue? I know superchargers take more cold cranking amps to start but surely I have plenty. I'm hoping an ignition amplifier might help with this a little.

My mechanic says he has my 1 step colder NKG plugs gapped to .027 right now

I think that gap is too low personally but no aside from that the injectors shouldn't be hurting you unless you are dumping to much fuel at start up. How are you scaling the injectors during cranking?

what should the gap be set at?

I am installing an ignition amplifier.

My installer was saying .03 was the biggest he'd recommend even with the ignition amplifier. Seems like I read about someone mentioning .045 at one point on the boards

Stock is .044, most gap to .035 mine are at .039 right now...

MIA .039 with stock ignition? What kind of plugs? I have yet to open up the gap on my plugs after I put my DLI in. I have been told open up gap in .003 increments till it breaks up, Im at .035 now I guess Ill just go to .040 seeing as how your basically there...

Sentry-I dont know what this is worth to you but AAM reccomends .035 gap with FI and stock ignition on 1 step colder platinum plugs( I run this)-they dont like gapping Iridium.

I had TS flash for the 550's and I still had trouble starting , Lowering the fuel preasure helps [a little] . Giving it a blip of the gas pedal before hand helps [a little] . Giving it gas as you crank it helps [ some ]

The thing that finally did the job , and now it starts every time with out cranking it over and over . Was to drill the 1/8 in. hole in the throttle plate . Idle shoots up to around 1200rpm and slowly comes down to 800rpm and idles better than ever . It will idle a little higher than you had it set at

alright thanks, maybe that's been my issue all along. I'll call him up and tell him to regap them to .035 while he's working on the injectors and ignition amp etc

I am going to be running water injection in a couple weeks so I don't want to go too crazy with the gap - that was partly another reason I wanted the ignition amplifier, to make sure the water doesn't put out the spark


I have the JWT idle hose fix, but not installed yet. I was going to see how things ended up with the 550's first then install that if I'm not happy with the idle. My mechanic was not recommending it saying that the ECU would learn around the idle.

he's tried to sway me from a lot of things that I ended up really being very happy with and was glad I told him to do it anyway

Ive always left the gap as they came...just checked them before install

yeah I bought my NKG's straight from Sharif and it says on his site that they're pregapped for FI in mind. My installer said there weren't gapped for FI at all and he lowered the gap to .027


Mia, what injectors are you running BTW? Alberto, I'm assuming you're using the same as Mia? 380's?

that JWT idle fix....does it have a vacuum line running from the back of the TB ...to the intake tube ? Or the air filter of the blower ?

with the return fuel and the 550's . It just doesnt seem to get enough air at start up and idle and the hole in the throttle plate seems to cure that

Alberto I have been running .039 gap since I put the kit on the car. Two sets of plugs now. No issues there


Sentry I'm running 380s but I think Alberto has upgraded.

My "pregapped" plugs from Sharif were at .043 too wide for my car it was missing on the street and dyno. Switched to .035 platinums and its running great, even better/smoother with the HKS ignition. I run 550cc injectors. You'll feel a nice diffeence with a .035-.040 gap and the DLI man....

I maybe looking at it wrong , or not getting it . But the vacuum line running from the back of the TB to the hose coming from crank case . And that crank case breather hose runs to the air filter going into the blower . At least on the stock G35 Vortech kit it does . Wouldnt it be kind of hard to build boost if your leaking it all back to the air filter for the blower ????

I have no idea. It goes to the PCV valve hose right? I dunno, I suppose I might try drilling the throttle plate. Just kinda nervous about doing it

just called my mechanic, he says that the APS manuals say to gap the plugs to .028 - and that's what my plugs are currently at, not .027 like I mentioned earlier

I mentioned that there seems to be a lot of people running .035 and even .039 and he thinks that's really not that safe and that there might not be enough spark with it gapped like that.

I dunno, he's going to talk it over with the tuner to discuss if there will be any real benefit to gapping bigger and then get back to me. He was saying that you want the spark to be as small as possible to eliminate the possability of getting blown out. Also he was asking if everyone who's running .035-.039 are actual FI installers/mechanics or just internet forum people

I dunno, it might be that the starting issue is the engine needing more air

Well being an "internet" person doesn't mean we're clueless. As for who set my gap it was the Mechanical Engineer who designed the Turbonetics 350Z kit. I kept it at what he set it to...

Oh and that has been that way for 25,759 miles of this morning...ZERO issus.

yeah I'm not doubting anyone's knowledge here. I tend to agree with everyone here since they're running fine.

It's interesting though if the TN manual says to gap to .035 and the APS says to gap to .028. I'm not running the APS kit either. As nice as their kits are, I'm sure they don't have the answers for every other kit out there.

Actually Turbonetics manual doesn't tell you to gap the plugs at all because their test car (Brad's G35) has been running the stock plugs at the stock plug gap for 20k miles now with no issues either...

Sentry I know you have trust in your tech, but you should really try opening that gap up. Id honestly listen to the advise of my fellow Z owners instead of a tech thats gapping your plugs to APS specs-seems kinda silly to me. Worst comes to worst you only wasted 30 minutes of your time
