Default Popped my Greddy TT Engine (Stock Block) in the Rockies...

Just thought I would post up what happened to my car.

https://my350z.com/forum/mid-atlantic/202836-my-engine-popped.html

I believe the setup was extremely reliable and only failed due to bad gas in the Midwest, high altitudes and consistent 100MPH+ runs racing a BMW M5 for 3 days straight. We were beating the crap out of the car for so long something had to give sooner or later.
I have been impressed with the tuning Mike at AAM was able to do with the car and the HP # we got were impressive. I am sure, if I had not taken this trip the engine would have lasted much, much longer under normal driving circumstances.

Now we install my super built motor and see what we can do.

Again, sorry to hear but you definitely had fun in the process. Now it's built motor time. I'm not far behind ya.

Your name is kind of fitting for your motor.

But on a serious note, I am truly sad to see that you lost your motor.

his new motor is coming along nicely.....i believe he ran 87 octane with 10% ethanol (crappy gas) in the mountains...while he was napping his friend, witout knowing better ran the car at 10.5 psi and POP....but don't worry...the new lotus he bought for the ride home certainly made our trip on teh AKA rally a BLAST!!!!

Damn Noah, you guys should have set him up with a "bad gas" map-just retarded the timing across the board. Always think ahead!

Yea, that was my 490+whp on 93 octane @ 10 PSI on the stock block.
We were running cross country on my 7.5 PSI map which was probably around 375- 400 whp.

Bert as for the map; it never occurred to us that I might be forced to use crap gas + 10%ethanol, especially at altitude. Not to mention beating the **** out of it running uphill was not the best for the engine.

Anyway, lessons learned. Lots of busted cars on the return race. Might have to consider a stock car for an enduro race like that next time.

PS. Can't wait to get my new engine in. Gonna be pretty sick I think.

Wow, 490 rwhp on a stock block! I know you weren't running that on the race, but as soon as your friend did(with the cheap gas) - boom! Yeah, you can't blame that on the kit.

Sorry to hear about it, but as the others said, there's going to be no limits now with the new engine build! Good luck!

I am impressed with those number on the stock block. Nice! How many FI miles did you get on the stocker?

Sam: Thanks for the condolences. My block is already done, I just need to get the car back from GT Motorsports in LA and we should just be able to pull the one block and put the new one in.

As for the # of miles. Hell I installed the TT system last August with 6,500 miles on it. The car has been driven to FL, NH (a couple of times), OH & NC before I started this trip. I think I put somewhere around 7 – 8,000 miles on it in the last year. Plus I have run it on the quarter mile a # of times.

Nah, I mean the whole engine.. I have a completely new engine getting ready to be put in. The block is done already. They are in process of completing the head work now. Just got to order some final replacement parts; otherwise everything has been ported, polished, redecked, cryo treated, ceramic coated, gaskets ordered and 3 angle valve job done. I even have the 1/2" head studs and head lifting bolts done. Frank only needs to work out that new setup for the rear cooling passages and we should be pretty much ready for whatever I chose to throw at her.

How are things coming with you Toby? Everything moving along? FYI: I saw your engine at GT Motorsports when I dropped my car off. Or at least they told me it was your engine... That shop is amazing... I should have bought their stroker kit..

Alright, I thought I would update this thread with the initial findings from AAM on what happened to my motor.

1st: The exhaust leak was not the head gasket, but in fact one of my wastgates coming lose.
2nd: Most importantly NEVER, and I MEAN NEVER, run under boost on less then 90 octane. Matter of fact, I might carry some 104 race fuel in my car just incase I wind up in BFE somewhere.

Apparently I had a massive amount of heavy detonation running on that 87 octane.. SO much in fact, the HKS KnockAmp could not do anything about it. All of the ringlands are destroyed, some of them soo bad they are completely missing… There are metallic bits/dust everywhere inside the engine and extensive scoring of the block to the extent they believe it is junk. The entire intercooler system is coated in oil and will need a complete degreasing.

Basically the engine was totally screwed… Remind me to not let anyone else drive my car again… and NEVER use anything less then 92 Octane.

Anyway, the new engine is getting the finishing touches and they are completely rewiring my engine bay to move all lines/hoses/wires to the bay walls wherever possible. Hopefully this will only be a couple weeks project and my Baby will be back on the road before the end of the month.
