Don't forget tuning which adds another $500. Similar quote I received from the same shop. Except my head work was quoted twice as much.

Exactely why im trying to be patient and save for built motor and kit all at once. I already saved almost enough for a tt kit (few hundred short). It will be worth the wait in the long run..

a longblock is cheaper to install than a shortblock, but then again your kinda making up the difference in the actual price of the longblock compared to the shortblck

Actually The only money he would save going that route, would be the cost of porting and polishing the heads and a valvetrain. Otherwise, the heads come of and get reinstalled anyway on both scenarios, so there really is no labor savings..

Why do the heads come off and then reinstalled?

Default very fair

I just checked my mitchell manuals er dvds LOL ....pretty much the industry standard for automotive repair. For a STOCK shortblock install the book calls for 28.4 hours. that leaves 11.6 hours for turbo R&I and all the other issues that always seems to pop up whenever high perfomance is involved. Anyone who has been in this industry for anytime knows they would at best break even on a job like that. Phunk is right, most reputable shops will do a recheck after a big jobs and if there are any issues, you are now on the red side of the ledger.
This is why there so few good shops. The smart ones either charge a ton of cash or have guys that dont mind working long hours to be able to give people a good deal. The second option gets old after a while. Just my 2 cents
