Ah - there are road coarses all over the midwest and here is a site where they will teach what acceleration really is!

http://www.nasamidwest.com/season/

And your Cobra owner is going to cry when in 20 minute you pass him twice!

Also keep in mind that if you want a 9 second car you need to have a NHRA Drivers license as well.

Here's what I never get, I've seen plenty of Supras running 9 seconds and driving to and from the track....what makes the supra so special?

I'd never heard that before, same with the rule about having to have a rollbar if you run 11's and lower...which I thought was just at certain tracks because I'd never seen/heard that rule at any tracks around here or when I lived in Texas. Happen to know where I can read up on that? If there are some new rules I prolly better read up on them before I begin anything.

yes you need a NHRA license to run under 10.00. you need a 5 point roll bar if you run faster than 11.49 or trap higher than 135 no matter what you ran, you need an 8 point cage if you run 10.00 or better.

parachute at 150. the supras have been out for ten years longer than the Z, they didnt start getting fast until the late 1990s, our cars have been out about 4 years now, we are all starting to figure stuff out everyday, we WILL have 800 hp streetable Zs very soon and in my "opinion" will have 9 second STREET 350zs. we have all the power to do it, it just needs to be done....

Thanks, I'd never been made aware of that before. THere's more than power to making a drag car as we all know such as suspension setups to get the power to the ground, and gearing. I don't 'have' to pick an import but since the Z and the 1970 chevelle' have always been my #2 dream cars I wanted to try it with the Z, which with the search I'v been doing in the last year while I wait for my insurance money to get to me I'v seen that those with high #'s can't get the power to the ground at the strips. Now I'v spent the day weighing ideas and I'v thought about getting a Z and doing light mods to it to enjoy it and possibly turning a newer mustang into a drag car since they seem to be better suited for strait lines. Any thoughts on that? The more I want to make the Z do it the more I look at how I'm going to have to change the car, and I don't want to have to rip the car apart to make it something its not. Now everyone says take'm to the twisties...would the Z's handling improve chances if I were able to get him to race me on the oval track north of here?
I know stupid questions...first time building my own drag car and actually clueless as to where to start, but I'd like to build a newer car to run against him instead of something thats been done 1000x already.

Automatic race transmission? Thats all it needs... The gearing is wayyyy off for a fast car. Supras get horrible ET's and great traps from the average driver for a reason. If auto trannys are used however, they become less streetable. Who wants to rev to 3k just to move?

As for that track in PR, did anyone notice how every car there runs about .5 seconds faster than normal??
To answer your question, NO you wll not build a streetable 9 second 350Z, and if you ever do, look at spending about $100,000 in the process...

Please! if no one has done it yet, it does not mean it can not be done, we ran a 10.6 pass on a daily driven 350z ! and there is another 350z from another shop that ran 10.4 AUTOMATIC! 9's? it only a matter of time.

oh! and now are times are because the track? whats normal??

Dude, not to start anything, but I think that track you guys post time from is down hill The abuse of running the Z into the 10's kills the 6mt real fast.I just blew up my tranny last night at the track. The angle cut gears are not really good for powershifting and dont like it a whole lot...At over 600 hp we find the tranny becomes another weak link,as an other guy broke his 3rd gear on the dyno. So if you guys have been really running those times in a daily driven Z then most likely you have epxperienced these failures also. I remember being at Performance Motorsports a long time ago when they were running mid 10's and they had about a dozen 6mt trannys sitting there that they had broken... Also keep in mind, the equipment we would be required to run in the US if we planned on running at any track would add some weight to the car as well as make it non condusive for daily driving...Cant recall last guy I say driving on the street with an 8 point cage, wheelie bars and a parachute..
Trust me we are still a ways off from a legitimate 9 second street 350Z in the US..

Abyss, i just noticed a few things about the post after reading the whole thing. Your main concern isn't just running 9's -- It's all about beating your brother (or was it dad?) in his cobra.

Now to the cobra... you mentioned it had 24" rims? Was this an exaggeration? I dont think 24s would ever come close to fitting a mustang, i mean those barely fit on most huge SUVs- thats like Hummer H2 status.

Also im no cobra expert, but with only those few mods and those heavy *** rims it sounds like 9s in that cobra is pretty far off. I would say 11s tops.

Now to address Puerto Rico:

Some of you know this, some of you dont, but cars are fast at lower altitudes because there is higher atmospheric pressure. So maybe guys in puerto rico are running a little quicker because they are closer to sea level than most here in the States? This is just a thoery, i have no idea what the altitude is like there.

It's my uncle's Cobra and no I wasn't exaggerating, I thoguht they were 24's, they are 22's. (I'll link a pic at end of thread) The main point of the thread to was to see if anyone has reached the 9's in a Z but yes my main concern is being able to beat him since I'm sick of losing to him, and as I posted in a previous post they told me they hit 9's but showed me no proof and thats why I mentioned the wheels and not sure if they really coulda ran 9's with that setup. At this point, being my 1st time building the engine in one of my cars, I'd be happy to build the Z to atleast be able to hang with him and be satisfied. I know now after what I'v been reading, if I aim for those #'s my 1st time building I'm going to get in over my head. So I think I'm going to aim for low 11's and see if I can hit those with my budget and let someone with more experience be the 1st to hit 9's.

Dude....First off, there is no way in hell that cobra will run anything short of 12.8 with those ugly A S S rims, And I dont care if he had a Kenny Bell Supercharger with Kenny Bell himself driving it...Second, anyone who puts those wheels on ANY car, let alone a mustange cobra, should be smacked..
Tell your RICER uncle, to keep his Mustank in Da HOOD with his bling bling yo! wheels..He will never see a 9 second pass except off a cliff..
