Replacement APS ST turbo options...?
I haven't posted the story over here, but long story short: the ride found its way into a cement pole at 45mph last weekend. The car is nearing paint-ready status, and today I climbed under to replace the a lower control arm and clutch line. When I removed the intake coupling from the turbo, a broken bolt/nut fell out....
Looking at the turbo, it looks like the impact caused the imepller shaft to break, allowing the impeller to slam forward and lodge itself in the housing. I'm thinking this is pretty terminal
I have the remainder of the APS parts already ordered (intake piping, intake coupling, etc) b/c I hadn't expected the snail to be damaged.
So, options? Order a new one from APS? Have this one rebuilt? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Almost done with the removal; noted that the compression side is wobbly (from the impact - the intake compression piping smacked against the housing, something got worked loose).
In the picture below, I can slightly wobble the intake side, which allows the impeller to spin freely. Maybe I can salvage this damn thing - anyone know of a decent snail rebuilder in the States?

back when my turbine decided to eat some pieces of metal, i did some research and found out that the cartridge is an off the shelf GT35R, which can be bought off the shelf at many online dealers for around 1000, if ordered from APS its 2000. APS thinks highly of the custom compressor housing. i think it might be a 35/40R cartridge. anyway, if the compressor wheel is ok, which it might not be since its rubbing the housing, it can be put on the new cartridge.
you need to remove it anyway and get a good look at what is broke, the housing is just aluminum so it might be cracked. if thats the case all you need is the cartridge and housing and just get the elbow welded on. that would be much cheaper than buying from APS.
a friend of mine has a turbo rebuilding shop, called BNR supercars, he does awesome turbo work, complete custom hybrid turbos, etc, etc, he does all of Z1 motorsports turbos for their high hp 300zxs and all the high hp RX7s.

Turbo removed - broke the bearing assembly - I'm thinking this could be rewelded...
Tig - any idea if you could pass this pic onto your friend to see whether they could repair this? When 'moved' back into position, the turbine spins freely, tho the end capnut broke off, so it will need reassembly. Blah...
Also, if anyone has additional suggestions?

ill talk with him and see. worst case scenario is spending 1k for a new cartridge. you wouldnt want to use that comp wheel, im sure its toast from spinning into the housing. take the comp housing off, its just those 6 bolts, mark it so youll know how it goes back together, and look at the comp wheel real good for bent vanes. plus i think that bolt broke off, not certain, but once you take the housing off the wheel might just fall off.

Blades are OK - spins freely, no noise, etc. But, the shaft is broken and cast iron assembly cracked. I think the assembly can be rewelded, but concerned about whether I can replace just the shaft or if I'm out an entire cartridge

http://www.majesticturbo.com/ these guys do really good work for lower prices than most other places. They have also been around for a really long time, you should sent it to them and see what they can do for you.

You can get a 62-1 Turbonetics turbo ball bearing of course for about $1400 with the compressor housing made how you need it. It would even be water cooled. That should save you about $600-700 depending on who you get it through. Thats with a 12 month/12k mile no fault no hassle warranty too so if anything else happens like this they would replace it for free (yes even if you wreck it). Its up to you but at least you can save some money. And if you want to switch to an external wastegate now would be the time. Or you can still get it with an internal gate.

GT35R to a 62-1 is a huge step backwards in time by about 10 years worth of technology - besides the fact that a GT35R CHRA can be had for about $1000.
I know a couple guys who have had excellent experiences with phoenix turbo so +1 for them, but really any reputable turbo rebuild facility can do what you're asking. The welding that you asked about would likely not work - not for very long anyhow. Your CHRA is toast.
The comp housing might be repairable but if the gouge is too deep it's going to have to be scrapped. New compressor housings aren't terribly expensive, and then the little elbow that apparently needs to be welded on there should not be very expensive to tig on there. I definately wouldn't go through APS if their price for a new GT35R is $2000 like someone stated - that's crazy talk.

I think at this point, since the compressor housing is fine (no gouges, believe that?), that I'll look for a new cartridge. I'll call around on Monday to see if I can better the $1199 I found so far.
I would like to upgrade to something a tad larger; I think, however, I'll wait for APS' external wastegate they're about to release.

i found one for 950 shipped, id shop around some more, ill try to find that vendor again. i think unless youre ready to spend a lot for custom work youd be better off either getting another cartridge and upgrading comp wheels and getting the housing milled out. aps made it so there isnt much room to upgrade.

if u have enough space and cash to afford supporting mods, get a T04Z from HKS. Else, get a 3240 from them, which gives as much as hp with gt35r and much less lag, best turbo i've ever seen.
