Question Gauging interest in aftermarket radiator w/ integral oil cooler.

Hello all, I'd like to put a feeler out to see who may be interested in a dual radiator/oil cooler setup specifically for the 350z, which mounts directly in the place of the existing radiator. I was contacted by a local shop/manufacturer who will be developing this for an SCCA Grand Am cup 350z who would like to see if there is any interest specifically in the 350z forced induction community. Of course, this could also definitely be used for an NA 350z for added cooling and reduced oil temps during track use.

Basically, what we have is a twin row, single core radiator with a partitioned section for oil cooling. The suggested design will include a thicker aluminum radiator core to maximize heat transfer efficiency and also a full oil cooling system in the same unit.

This will allow for those with a front mount intercooler to be able to run a true oil cooler setup without the worry of mounting an external mount oil cooler unit. The system will include complete AN fittings and, I believe, replacement fans. If enough interest is expressed, it will be test fit on a variety of setups to ensure clearance issues will not be a problem. I also brought up the idea of a slimline fan setup for some of the single turbo and supercharger setups which clearance is a problem.

Here's a quick blurb of info from the developer:

All aluminum radiator, vacuum brazed for a stronger, more durable unit, and heliarc welded for strength and precise conformity. It will also then incorporate another unique manufacturing step to assure long life by adding a special high temperature epoxy that provides additional tube to header strength and helps prevent vibration failure. This process is Q-1 approved by Ford Motor Company, one of the toughest quality standards in the industry.

The core should be compatible with air conditioned cars. I will be able to provide approximate horsepower levels that it can handle after the design phase is complete. It will incorporate fittings that will allow the radiator to work with the other pieces of our oil cooler kit, so that for oil cooling purposes, the only thing different than our standard oil cooler kit would be that the radiator is being substituted for the Setrab oil cooler. This way, no additional room is used up in the space needed for an intercooler. The benefit for non forced induction cars is simply better water cooling capacity and no other external component mounting.

Please post here if you'd be interested in getting ahold of one of these. If we get enough interest here, it would definitely be something that could be produced as a 350z specific setup with FI owners in mind. Price is still up in the air, but it would definitely be a top quality part so don't expect it to be cheap.

Thanks!

I wouldn't expect it to be cheap, but would be very curious to see the price. I may be interested.

Craig, as I'm sure you know, my concern is, will it fit the TN kit with stock fans?

it doesn't work like that, it's a 2 in 1 unit. If you want an oil cooler, go buy one, there's no separating this thing, do you understand?

Yes you could. But, with most FI kits there's limited amounts of space after the kit is installed. This would save on room.

Craig ask them if it would matter what kinda fluid would be running through the secondary cooler. Say I wanted to hook up some tranny lines to it for a tranny cooler and turn my current tranny cooler to my oil cooler.

I can't imagine that'd be bad....tranny coolers are usually aluminum as well.

I'm interested as long as the price is reasonable...about the same as a koyo radiator + oil cooler.

So, so far from the feedback received leads me to believe there is interest but this is dependant on price and fitment with specific kits. Most people that have replied so far seem to be running the ST kits too, so I can see how that would be a concern. It was one of the first questions I asked when informed of the idea.

I'll talk to him about it. If it looks like fitment with a single turbo setup might be an issue, I'll let him look at my car and/or test fit.

Expecting to same the same price for a low priced koyo radiator and cheap oil cooler setup isn't reasonable in my opinion. This setup will be race proven and of the highest quality you can find. The utility of the setup is also a huge plus, meaning that you don't have to worry about mounting the oil cooler.

Yes, it is all one unit so you would have to get both the cooler and the radiator.

Matt - like chimmike said, I don't see why you couldn't run it as a tranny cooler. You would just have to figure out the plumbing involved to cycle the tranny fluid through the cooler. I'm not familiar with tranny cooler setups so I'm not sure if you would need some kind of special sender unit to do this?

he would probably need a sort of general fluid pump, that won't corrode from the tranny (note: Matt is a tranny) fluid.
