Question ProCharger or Vortech

Hi guys,

I did a search and I coulnd't find what I was looking for exactly on the forums, so hopefully I'm not just another new-b re-posting.

I'm pretty new to this site and the forums and also to the Z community.

I just got my Z 3 months ago and I've been wondering what supercharger the community trust or recomments. I want to get some extra power, but I don't want to make significant modiffications to the car and I thought that a supercharger can do the trick.

From browsing the internet and forums, It's come down to the ProCharger or the Vortech. I would really appreciate if you guys could give me some insights and advise on which one you would recommend, pros and cons.

Thanks!

Vortech guys are having more luck then the ProCharged guys.

I've never owned the Stillen, but knew someone close that did- and by reading I think the Stillen is still by far the most reliable.

I don't know if its just because of ratio or what... but it seems like more people buy Vortech and not many people blow them up. On the other hand... Not too many buy ProCharger, but you frequently hear stories about it blowing engines.

If you go with ProCharger [or any for that matter] the timing is key. Throw out the FMU they give you and get something like the UTEC or E-Manage [but it sucked for me].

Whatever you get you will probably end up biulding on it alittle. Whether it be the tranny, or the fuel system. Stillen won't offer much improvement past around 350whp, which is where many Vortech and ProCharger guys start out around 7psi.

A lot of us have reported on the differences between the two kits. There are some pros and cons between the two.

I went with vortech, and between the two most people have, but don't let that stop you from being different. The ATI has some nice features too. The show stopping issues for me was what I was reading about belts breaking and the bracket assembly bending as you start adding a lot more power. That and the vortech tuner kit cost dramatically less at the time. Not sure what it is now, but you're probably wanting the full kit

do a search in the FI section under username of "skyydiver". I have some recorded some great information that should be exactly what you are looking for. It even has more specific questions in my posts that you may or may not have thought of already.

I like the prochargers self contained oil, no tapping into the oil pan. Both are good blowers though. I think people covered this topic in a few other threads. Probably more feedback there.

tapping into the oil pan isn't really big deal though, you can just tap a spacer, or use a bigger oil pan like the APS one that already has has a plugged hole to use with a FI kit

even if you tapped the block, you can always patch it back up later down the road if you ever took the kit off

to my knowledge, most FI kits share the engine oil for cooling the turbos. I'm not sure where the stillen or HKS stand/stood on that issue though
The ATI is one of the only FI kits to offer self contained oil

Stillen and HKS are both self-contained as well. Vortech is the only supercharger that taps into the car's oil system. Difference is, ProCharger asks for 6k mile intervals on the oil changes while Stillen is every 50k or 100k (I know its 100k in most OE applications) and HKS is 100k intervals.

I'd say vortech, by just, sheer number of people who's got them. I see that you're in cali and many of your average tuner shops are familiar with the kit.

I think they are both good kits. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

I noticed you live in California, this makes the choice very simple, Vortech, ProCharger is not smog legal, and putting anything that dosent have a CARB EO number on it will greatly reduce the value of your vehicle.

Forced, you could have said that with out being too biased

Vortech is safer than the Procharger out of the box.. The Procharger, you will have to pay more money to get it safer.. Procharger is also much louder than the Vortech.. it sounds like a jet engine from 2 block away.. all the other differences aren't that great and they will make about the same horsepower levels.

With all that money i put into the Procharger to get it running good and safer... I could have just bought an APS TT and be done with it That's what impatience will do for ya

Incorrect.

The Vortech is CARB legal. The Procharger is not.
