What's your opinion on purchasing a used turbo kit? Is it worth saving a few bucks?

Honestly I thought the same thing, I did save a few bucks, but it was definatly not worth my time nor Jeremy's. If you are going to do it, just do it right the first time and buy a new kit. Save your self the troubles of missing parts and all the other b.s.

if your buying used make sure that there is no play in the compressor wheel and inspect for damaged housings plus you may have blown seals that may be hidden from the eye might cost more in the end to have the turbos rebuilt/replaced id go new and save the headache.

i bought a used turbo. Turbonetics single turbo. It's been working fine for around 10K miles. The seller, a guy on this site, Sent me a video of the turbo while he spun it to show there was no play in the shaft. He also was very thorough on everything about it and the sale and even told me i could give him or his mechanic a call if i had any questions about the install or ANYTHING. Make sure you buy from a reputable person.

Depends reall on how much your saving. It is only worth it if you get ALL the parts you need. Double and triple check everything is there. One thing can cost you and your installer a lot of time and $$$.

Yes, if I had good vibes, but I know FI and have a good grasp of BS and straight shooters, There would be more than a few telephone conversations and of course as stated, the cost factor ( If there was a problem would I loose my ***?)

we deal with this all the time, we actually charge more for install on used kits than we do on new ones. its just so nice to open a new box and pull out the right part and install it. not dig through a mess and try to figure out if it is there.

best thing is to get a REALLY good parts list and seriously go through and check every part the best you can. then clean them all before you bring them to a shop. make sure you ask the person why they are getting rid of the kit too...

thanks!!

In the end, the money you save on a used kit can quickly disappear if you find missing / damaged parts. Just be sure to go through the kit thoroughly with an accurate parts list...

I agree, not worth the risk. Was contemplatng on this before. However, after seening a lot of horror stories on used FI kits, decided on a new TN. Been very happy with it. In addition a 1 year no-fault warranty with a local US manufacturer made it the best decision when I went FI. The only additional recommendation would be to have it installed by a well experienced shop on whatever kit you choose.

I guess a point to make is whether it is a single or twin kit, as the twins have more parts to them and more likelyhood of stuff missing, so you are bound to have better luck with a single turbo kit.

What if you were to buy a Turbonetics kit and then upgrade the turbo anways? If you pick up a Turbonetics kit for somewhere around $2,500 and $3,300 then add in a $1,500 turbo upgrade(GT35 or w/e) it would make sense to me. Also, building an engine and buying a used TT kit and upgrading the turbos would seem like a good idea. To buy a used kit have to depend on the turbo that comes with the kit wouldn't really be worth it then.
