Default Need help with vortech- squeling sound

Hopefully you all can help me out. I got my vortech installed about a month and half ago on my '03 track edition 350Z at a local speed shop with a good reputation. I noticed that when I first got it that it made a wierd squeling sound when it was at low rpm's (750-1500). It sounds like a brake squeling, or a whistle. In any case, they tell me that the sound is normal, but I tell them to tighten the belt anyway. It helps a little but the sound is pretty darn loud. It is pretty much there when I am either just starting the car, or just starting or slowing down in low rpms as I mentioned before. Anyway, I am tired of hearing that sound, so I had a friend take video. You will start to hear the whistle/squel about 20 secs in the video. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

certainly not normal to my vortech, have you pulled off the filter to see if there is any rubbing? Dont think thats belt related, but could always remove the cog belt to eliminate if its from the cog belt/ blower.

take your hand ..or something...and put it in front of the BOV at idle and see if the whistle goes away . Sounds to me you are discribing the whistle that is normal with Vortech;s BOV

Eeek - that hurt my ears.

Do just like cheat said..

1st - take the filter off and make sure that the impellers aren't rubbing on the housing.
2nd - take the cog belt off and start the car up just to make sure it goes away.
3rd - check the edges of the cog belt - are they worn down the metal? If one side is worn down, try flipping it around and see if it goes away. I have that same problem with mine.

I didnt click the link to see the vid . The high pitched whistle is the BOV , but the grinding sound is a bad blower or jackshaft

Booger,
Sorry do you mean that you didn't click the link before, but you just clicked it and you think the whistle is just the BOV, but you think I have a bad bearing or jackshaft?

You can find out if its the jackshaft by taking off the cog belt in the back of the blower. It takes a couple second to do it and its an easy way to eliminate the blower as a cause.

Did you do anything that we suggested??

Booger assumed it was just the BOV, but once he watched the video, he realized that it's coming from the blower (or jackshaft).

I am having the exact same issue, i have replaced the bypass valve, tried the filter, nothing works, adjusting screw etc... if you stick your finger into the port half way the noise stops or uf you cup your hand around the edge of the bypass port... it seems as though it is flowing too much air for what it is designed for and it creates a harmonic whistle...

Has any one tried putting a 6 inch or longer piece of radiator hose [ or simular ] on the end of it to see if it changes the air flow to stop the whistle ? Wanted to try it but never got around to it .

I am going to work on the car today, but just like Fidanza said when I cover or partially obstruct the bov, the sounds go away.

That whistle is coming from the BPV. You're going to have to play with the adjustment screw. Also check if you still have the O-ring in place inside the BPV, and make sure your BPV is mounted snug to the pipe. I had to play with the adjustment screw on mine, and now it only whistles for like half a second in 1st gear acceleration sometimes.

It looks like the shop installed my the bolt on my cog tensioner pulley on backwards. I will also turn the cog belt on backwards on the same time. That son of a @#$@#$ is tough to get off.

I removed the cog belt, and it appears the squeking sound is definately not the supercharger. It appears to be coming from one of the other pulleys. I will see about tightening up the belts. I also corrected the backwards tensioner cog.

Unfortunately, I think my supercharger is a victim of compressor surge. Does someone have an example of compressor surge? Instead of the constant whoosh when letting of the throttle, I get what seems to a stop and go whoosh sound.... where it goes for a second then stops and goes again. Do you have to remove the BOV in order to adjust it, or is this something you can do under the car? Thanks everyone for your help so far!

loosen your BPV. loosen it untill you have aobut 6-7 threads sticking out. try that.
