Default External Wastegate Conversion

Has anyone with a Standard APS TT Kit with the Garrett BB turbos
ever done a external wastegate conversion?

I asked a few vendors about getting the APS manifold from
the Tuner/Extreme version and the Wastegate downpipe
but no one has gotten back to me.

Trying to look at $$$ figures see if its even worth it.
I don't mind taking a trip to Blouch in PA or someone
local to weld the internal wastegate valve shut.

Looks like everything should be plug and play.

I looked into doing this two years ago, and it never panned out. APS won't source you the manifolds so you'll have to have custom ones made and then you'd just need a spot of weld on the turbo housing where the rod goes to the wastegate valve to keep it from opening and to allow you to convert back to internal gates if you ever wanted to.

It was going to be too cost and time prohibitive for me so I just bought some forge actuators and they work great.

I believe GTM offers this but it requires some sort of welding/modification from them...

Yea they probably cannibalize your standard APS manifolds and weld on a WG feed tube flange. Not a reliable way to go. The weld on the casting won't hold up well over time with heat cycles.

They only way I'd ever do this conversion is with APS extreme manifolds or custom manifolds...

They don't offer the manifolds.
I asked long ago and GTM never got back to me.
Also their kit vents the wastegates which gets annoying.
I already have the 3.5" monster downpipes.
All I need is the manifolds and the wastegate downpipe, Tial Wastegates.

Reason I ask is since I saw 2 tuner kits for sale.
one for 3k from GTM and another for 4k from FP.
Wouldn't it just be cheaper to buy these second hand
tuner kits and get what you need and possibly part it out
to make your money back or at least minimal loss if you
can pick one up for 3K like the one GTM was selling.

Since it's so hard to get individual parts from APS
I believe there might be a market for the individual
tubes, FMIC, standard manifold and such for current APS owners.

Totally agree with you Glex bout buying and parting out your old ****. It's just not worth it. Reason why I got rid of the TN kit and went Greddy Twins..

I have 2 tial WG's from the Greddy kit fs if you're interested... PM me.

The APS external wastegate pipe is prone to cracking.

Mine has cracked twice

Hey Glex, I thought we just spoke via PM a few days ago. I am still trying to get some info from APS for you and someone else I haven't forgotten about you guys

By the way that APS kit we were selling is already sold

Our kit offers open dumps and recirculating gates, don't know why you thought they were only open dumps.

Let me know if you need anything,

George I had contacted you a few months ago also.
Now since you here let me pose another question.
The GTM kits offer external wastegates with Garrett GT turbos.

Can those manifolds be used instead of the APS?
Inquiring minds want to know

Glen - if GTM does not have the piece you are looking for give Blouch a call. When I was there I noticed that they are not only distributors for Garrett, but for Tial as well. They at least be able to direct you to where to find the parts you are looking for. BTW, when they converted my turbos to the Garrett housings, they stuck a rod though the housing and then completely welded the gate shut, all the way around - not just a spot weld - pics in my build thread. Hopefully George can can you squared away, it would be great if an APS vendor on here was able to get individual replacement/upgrade parts for kits. Best of luck. - Cass

If you have the new style APS manifolds that's all you need for the conversion. I have had mine for about 5k miles and they work great.

I thought of this too, but sounds like a pain with a lot of $$ involved. doesn't sound worth it to me.

To each his/her own. I installed the external wastegates with the APS kit when I swapped for a built engine. We welded the actuator flapper valve closed and removed the actuator itself. I gives you a little more space in an otherwise crowded part on the engine bay. The only problem I had is that we had to use a torch and heat the dump tube and bent it a little more to make it fit. I have a stillen dual exhaust w/ test pipes. The exhaust is very quite until the wastegate dumps open then is sounds absolutely wicked.

I would have been a no-brainer if I had the new APS manifolds that are used in all the kits. I don't, which is why it would have been such a hassle for me.

With our manifolds the turbo placement would be different and the piping wouldn't line up.

You would have to modify all the piping going to the turbocharger and modify the down pipe.

He needs the new APS manifolds so it wouldn't be a Garret or TiAL part

Unless they are APS distributors as well.
