Default Project Big Blue

Welp folks, I figured I might as well start up a thread about a build seeing how there has been less and less as of late Now my build is no where near the level of some of the insanely kick *** builds under the shop builds threads, or on the level of other hardcore builds in this section but this is my first venture into the built motor club so bear with me

Little background is I used to have my old 03 with a greddy kit with 500hp (corrected #'s of course as I'm in denver - I know we cheat up here with the CF's lol uncorrected was right around 420 iirc with 11.6# wg springs) and ran the hell out of that sucker and eventually sold which was an immensely stupid thing to do..I could of been built years ago. Went through an 02 camaro and back to the Z with another 03. Went through an APS TT kit and at the time the greddy tuner kit was relatively new so I decided to sell the aps and go back to old faithful except with the new blood of the tuner kit.

Some specs:
*stock sleeves .020 vq35de
*9.5:1 JE pistons
*eagle rods
*BC 272 cams
*BC springs and retainers
*arp L19
*race bearings
*custom return fuel sys
*800cc injectors
*rev up oil pump
*competition stage 4 clutch
*act flywheel

FI:
*Greddy tuner 20g kit
*big blue 14# wg springs
*utec (yes I know but it'll make due, will go to haltech later when I get a new clutch and go with a c16 tune)

I opted for the higher compression as this will be a well used weekend car and dont need hardcore power all the time, that's what a c16 tune will be for Plus it should help the lower psi power and spool none the less.

The startup happened today and man the motor sounds smooth! I can't even describe how much I feel like a kid in a candy store with this build as its been in the works for quite a while and now that the car is back together it will be time to just put the miles on the built motor running off the stock greddy 7.5psi wg springs for around 1500 miles and lots of granny driving. Then after that it will be time to go with the big blue springs and really start having some fun

Now for some pics!

shot of the compressor side of one of the 20g's

front shot

20g's definitely got bigger exhaust housings

little closer on the hot side

engine back together

other side

old greddy kit on old z burnt a hole on this coupler cause a boost leak, little insurance this time around

motor back in and IC mounted

20g tuner kit comes with open dumps and 3" downpipes...NICE

rest of the charge piping run

Quick vid of the first startup!

The shop just has some misc stuff to wrap up and fix a small fuel leak, but other than that time to put some initial miles and do the first couple oil changes, then it'll be the part that probably sucks the most, driving around on a built motor while avoiding boost. By the time I get 1500 miles I'm gonna be going crazy

Will definitely post dyno's with corrected and of course uncorrected numbers for you sea level folks. It will be interesting to see what this kit can do over the 18g kit. I may also spin it to 7.5-8k but we will play around with that once its on the dyno for the tune to see how the power curve looks on the very top end.

Ugh how did you built motor folks handle breaking in the motor?

looks great mate. How do you know the motor will hold on till 8K rpm ?? Just trial and error?? Or do the internals state you can run up to a set RPM ??

Nice.

Get that C16 going and prove what those Greddys are really capable of.

thanks folks! I can't wait to open up the turbo's and see what is possible

DJ, the valvetrain componets and arp hardware should all be good for increasing the rpm, but we'll play that by ear as far as how much we will increase it. Gotta really make sure the turbo's just keep increasing to the rev line or increased rev line when its tune time, otherwise if they start to drop it doesnt make much sense to spin the motor more. But given the fact its got a decent top end cam and turbo size, I'm anticipating 7500 rpm to be doable if not slightly higher

it does sound very smooth....

one thing I have learned is that the difference in compression ratios will have no noticable impact on spool time. I have had turbos on stock compression, 8.8:1 and now 9:1 and they all feel the same. you might make a bit more power with less boost though

with those cams, you will make power well over 7 grand

Actually sorry folks if I gave off that impression, my buddy did the build for me at his shop. My motor would be all sorts of epic fail if I was putting it together LOL. I do however, love to enjoy the finished product

IIRC you did your own build if I remember correctly right? Think I remember seeing a thread by you, definitely props to having the time, and patience to do that. Eventually I wouldn't mind working on my motor, just dont have the space to accomodate a adequate work area. Thats a few years off lol.

I like the idea of going to a 9.5 to 1 piston. It will def start easier and idle more like stock.

thanks everyone! I can't wait to be able to post a review and driving impressions on this kit so keep an eye out

Shop got the fuel bugs fixed and motor has been heat cycled quite a bit today. Builder is going to do some road tune checking and sending off the oil for analysis. Ill post some pics and probably a vid or two tomorrow once I get the sucker back

In the mean time here's some pics of the fuel sys from when I had it made quite a while back:

Very Nice.... In for dyno results.

Those hot side impellers look HUGE! Is the manifold considered a header or log style? It looks almost like a hybrid of both.
