Default building my shortblock on a budget

hey guys i am just about to get my car to the shop.. i am tryng to keep it under 3000 for my shortblock.. machine shop is charging me 1000 so that leaves me with under 2000 to spend for parts...

i can get these parts for around 2000.

eagle rods
wiseco pistons
cosworth headgasket
cosworth tri-metal race bearings
ARP main studs
ARP L19 head studs

i have the greddy 18g twin turbo kit, i have a revup 6mt.. aiming for 450- 500 whp rite now, hoping for 600 in the future. Is the L19 studs necessary? they are close to 500wasnt sure if i can go without them.. or even just the regular head studs? any suggestions to the parts of my build?? any input would be great i am ordering these parts next week.. any vender on here that can give me a good price of these parts shoot me a pm.. thankss

let us know whenever you're ready, we offer all of your listed parts

you can shave a bit more $ by going with the ACL bearings (which is what Cosworth uses) - we offer these too (just not yet on our site, but we have them in stock)

eagle rods

cosworth headgasket
cosworth tri-metal race bearings
ARP main studs
ARP L19 head studs

i can get these parts for around 2000.

eagle rods------------------------------------$570
wiseco pistons -------------------------------$725
cosworth headgasket-------------------------$230
cosworth tri-metal race bearings------------$300
ARP main studs--------------------------------$200
ARP L19 head studs----------------------------$450

Total aproximate cost-------------------------$2475
prices from vendors on this forum.

For your goal the HR head studs might be more affordable maybe an HR head gasket might save some $$$$ as well

Just to give you an example, this is the parts list and machining of my budget build:

- Wiseco 96mm 8.8:1 Compression pistons $600 (a vendor here, I can find who if u want)
- Eagle H beam rods $400 (Local but found them at the time for same price but +shipping)
- ACL Main and Rod bearings $130 (from ebay, included mains, thrust, rod bearings)
- HR head gasket $53
- HR head bolts $46
- stock DE main bolts $54
- Rev up oil pump $178
---> Total Parts alone: $1,461

- Machine work:
- bore/hone $225
- balance $150
- resurface block $100
- file fit rings $60
- another $100 for random things
---> Total machine work $635

Final Total for build: $2,096

All the labor and assembly was done by myself.
Id say this setup is good for about high 500's whp, some say the stock sleeve cant take above 550 more or less, who knows. I havent done enough research to find someone with cracked sleeve, realistically i'll probably be around mid 400's for my fwd car (on daily driving), maybe low/mid 500 for occasional track visit. hope the info helps.

I can't see stock sleeves holding him back, it can handle more.

for you guys building on a budget, have you taken into consideration how much its gonna cost you after something goes wrong cause you skimped on parts the 1st time around? Honestly if had to skimp on parts cause i couldnt afford the proven parts, i'd re-evaluate building the block in the 1st place. Best of luck though...

I haven't seen any reliable evidence as to the limit of stock sleeves, in fact it seems that sleeved VQ35 blocks have a very short lifespan..... from everything I've read, I don't ever plan on sleeving my block when I build.

Well as for my build, I did not skip on anything that would give me issues. With the shortblock itself, I cant think of anything that may have been missed (bearings, rods, pistons, proper machining, redecking, stock mainbolts [prob the strongest part of a stock block], HR gasket and bolts have been proven to work, proper clearances for piston/wall, and all bearings, etc...) and I still managed to do it all in my budget. My motor has about 5-6k miles on it with not a single issue, with alot of abuse as well (also at 15psi single turbo). My oil analysis also says there arent any issues.

Sounds like a solid build. I'm glad you're actually doing oil analysis, if you haven't already please post it up in the build motor thread. The lack of solid data on high horsepower builds is a problem in the community.

Yeah my car is DD, and i drive it alot. I havent been to the track alot since school is in the way but hopefully now that its getting cooler i'll try harder to make it. as for Dyno #'s, none yet since I am waiting till the car is finished (which it never is lol), doing upgrades here and there, also putting in a bigger turbo soon since my current one is maxed out at 15psi. Eventually I will dyno just to see what its doing, but buttdyno and feel is in the low 400 range.
